ArT nEwS bLoG iS 5 YeArS oLd!

Art News Blog is FIVE years old. That must make me some kind of blogger or arts writer or something. I’m most comfortable with the “something” label though. Someone called me an art critic recently and I didn’t know how to react. He said it in a way that was supposed to be flattering but I was actually very offended.

If I was forced to label myself it would be Wanderer or Watcher of things. If I had to put something serious on my business card (which I don’t have.. even though ALL artists should have one) it would be Painter.

I’m really not a fan of labels and boxes though. We get too comfortable wearing them and before long we can’t live without them. It doesn’t matter if the label is one of power and influence or it’s one of lack and degradation, we cling to them like our life depends on them. A lot of opportunities are missed and interesting paths not taken because of labels and our fear of peeling them off.

How to Master the Art of Foley

Films captivate an audience with the larger than life sounds emanating from them. If a Director chooses only to use the natural occurring sounds when filming, the film would not captivate its viewers and the Director’s artistic vision would be lost. That is why the expert creativity of a Foley Artist is needed.

A Foley Artists studio can be an amazing array of objects and elements used to create sounds. Anything can be used to produce desired noises from shoes walking on wood to simulate someone walking on hardwood floors to the use of various fruits and vegetables to simulate someone getting shot.

Foley artists work in soundproof large studios for the most part, but you can get similar results in your own home, provided you take the time to soundproof the area as much as possible. With computer technology having advanced to where it is now, there are times you can digitally take out background noise, but it’s best to try to avoid it in the first place. It’s rather easy to soundproof a room; all you need is a room with a door that closes firmly and some sound absorbing material. It will take out most of the echo effect larger rooms tend to have.

Often times, recording sounds during filming can be quite useful. For example, if the scene has your characters walking down a gravel path why not grab a good headset and mic and record it as they walk. Or, you can have a member of the production team walk at the same speed while you record it during a filming break.

Voiceovers and narration require a little testing to get the right sound you are looking for. This will mean you will have to try placing the microphone at varying distances from the actor. In addition, making sure you have a good quality microphone will help too. Some examples of this include, if you are recording a voiceover because your actor wasn’t hear well during filming, you’ll want to place the mic near the actor. But, keep in mind that a shield over the mic will eliminate the natural huffy sounds we make when we speak. If your character is further away, or in a different room, the optimum position is to place the mic further away from your actor in order to simulate distance. Taking several recordings will allow you more material to work with.

If a fight scene is on your agenda, try hitting a slab of meat, punching bag or leather chair. If you need to record broken bones, try breaking a crisp vegetable like celery. Almost anything can be used to create sounds such as walking, clothes rustling, horse saddles, items breaking, and fighting.

A Foley artist is an expert at listening to ordinary every day sounds, and finding items that can create those sounds on film. Try walking around your neighborhood and really listen to the noises around you. Look around your home and picture what sounds they could create when used for foley.

Once you are finished recording, you will need to mix and edit your foley. You will need an audio program, many of which you can download online at several sites. It’s really a matter of knowing what you need in the program and what your budget is. These programs take a bit of a learning curve and playing around with them to really understand the effects and bring out exactly what you want. Just like the big studios, you will have to pump up the sound so to speak.

If this sounds a little overwhelming or time consuming, you can also purchase pre-recorded sounds. Digital Juice and Sound Ideas are just to name a couple of companies. Pre-recorded sounds can be saved to a disc and used whenever you may need them.

Always remember the number one rule of Foley; don’t go overboard. The added sounds are supposed to appear natural. The last thing you want is for your audience to be able to tell that the sounds were recorded in a studio. Foley requires time and practice, but once you have mastered it, the rewards are well worth it.

Art has always been much respected- all previous civilizations estimated it very highly. Everyone knew how important it was for the cultural and mental development of the people. His most noted pictures are Siete Punto Uno and Mana Nalu (“the power of the wave”).

There is another technique which is pretty much like Trompe l’oeil. However, it is simpler and artists get to know it from very early age. That technique is called prospective. It gets all objects in the painting to look solid and the viewer is also able to make a distinction between the close and far located in the picture objects. The objects in the background are usually smaller than these in the foreground. When prospective is used in a painting we call the objects 2D.

However, the prospective can be divided into three different techniques: linear prospective, reverse prospective and a prospective containing both previous types (mixed, sophisticated). It is good to know that the reverse prospective is of a rare use in art.

Those were some techniques which each artist knows and are learnt from a very early age. Remember that it is no accident that painting became so popular and the most expensive wares ever sold. Of course, it is not important just to be or call yourself artist! You should prove your skills and be estimated by the others. If you have talent and worked hard, you will become popular and achieve a huge success for sure.

When learning how to paint, the regular brush and paint will not suffice. Knowledge about the different types and sizes of brushes is important. Prices of brushes also range depending on the material used. Synthetic hair commands a lower price compared to real hair. The size of the brush determines the size of the stroke. Small brushes result to fine strokes while big brushes are used for broad strokes. Thus, having a collection of brushes with varying sizes is necessary.

Paints also vary in types. For starters, it is better to use watercolor or acrylic. These two come in affordable prices and are easy to use. Although oil gives a very good finish, it is more expensive and is hard to apply.

Canvas is by far the most preferred material among painters. For professional ones, they go for the stretched canvas. For beginners, a canvas panel will do. Watercolor paper is also an option if you want to use watercolor. Although paper, it is absorbent. Acrylic paper is best for medium like acrylic. However, canvas may also be used for the latter.

To start with the painting proper, familiarize yourself with the properties of color. Knowing how to mix primary and secondary colors and what may result upon such combination is a required tool one must acquire. Knowing how to manipulate black and white for instance, will help one in doing varying shades of objects or scenery.

You may ask, what should you paint? It depends on your preference and likes. You may start with basic shapes. Later on, you may venture on portraits, landscapes, or even abstract pieces.

Whimsical Accessories: Childrens Art

Working with childrens paintings can often inspire a sense of wonder to those involved. As the years have passed, I have been privileged to work with many artists and decorators who have both experienced and created this sense of wonder.

One of my fellow artists tells the story of how his sense of whimsy was restored. He was working on revamping a waiting room area in a childrens hospital. In his attempt to find wall hangings he ran across two paintings based upon a book from his childhood. The emotions and memories triggered by these paintings seemed to restore his ability to view his project through the eyes of a child making it one of his most successful projects to date.

A friend who worked at a rehab center as an administrator once confided that the simple addition of childrens paintings to the physical therapy lounge seemed to lift the spirits of their patients – Adults and children alike.

As told by a decorator friend, whimsical accessories are not only for children but can bring joy to many adults as well. She was working with a couple whose style could only be described as cold and stark. However, as they looked through samples they seemed quite smitten with some childrens paintings”Lollipop Art. Not only were the paintings added as a main focal point to the public areas of their house but they seemed to actually infuse a warmth into the couple as well as the house.

A fellow artist describes how a dance studio owner raved that the mural the artist was asked to paint on the walls at the dance studio so inspired the young students that enrollment almost doubled. The children so admired the ballerinas in the mural that they wanted to be just like them.

As can be seen by these instances, both children as well as adults can benefit from a bit of whimsy in their lives. Childrens paintings are but one way to infuse you life with fun and inspiration.

Several people work behind the scenes for months to bring perfection to the art of dance. Composer or Musician

Without the right music to go along with it, dance would not be entertaining nor would it have a specific rhythm. Often the music is already written, but the musicians and composers work together with a choreographer in order to modify parts of the song so that the dancers can perform certain steps that show them from their best side or in order to make a whole new scene. There are also times when it is required to rewrite a song so that it can be worked into what the choreographer has planned.

Set Designer

The background is important and having one that goes along with the dance and music is necessary to create the right atmosphere. In fact, quite often the objects used to make the background are used in a way that enhances the dancing. It is the job of every skilled set designer to be able to create a mood that will join the music, dance and story with each other. Being able to switch from an indoor scene to outdoor is not as easy as it looks but for the lighting designer, it is done with ease. This is a very technical area of dance that requires schooling in addition to a love of the stage.

The Costume Designer

Can you imagine watching a show where the costumes were, well, dull and boring? The job of the costume designer is complex and involves working together with the choreographer to discuss and choose colors and materials or textures. The importance of this is the knowledge of how different lights affect various materials and that is an important part of the presentation. All these aspects need to work together.

The Make-Up Artist

The make-up artist has to be very creative. This means to have the talent to be able to make-up paint and brushes to create different looks, such as that of youthfulness, evil, kind or aging. Many times it needs to be repeated more than once. This is where the professionals stand out, because it is not as simple as many assume it is. Working on a human face is very different than a canvas and on occasion the make-up artist ends up doing hair design, also.

There is much cooperation required when producing a show related to dance. These were examples of a few careers students can use to appreciate and be made aware of the importance of cooperation in the many careers that are somehow associated with dance.

Many Latin-American dances come from Cuba and Cha Cha is no exception. It was founded in the 1950s by a well known Cuban composer and violinist Enrique Jorrin.

Cha Cha is an offshoot of Mambo and was originally known as a triple Mambo. This is because of the three quick steps (cha cha cha), known as the “chasse”, that are taken to two beats of music. This version of Mambo quickly started gaining popularity and soon evolved into a separate dance now known as Cha Cha.

What does Cha Cha means? It doesn’t mean anything in particular, it’s an imitation of the sound that the shoes of the dancers made on the floor. The original name Cha Cha Cha suggests the three steps. The official name today is only Cha Cha.

Cha-Cha is danced to a music written in 4/4 time – four beats per measure. There are two slow steps followed by three quick steps – all together five steps to four beats of music. The rhythm is one, two, cha, cha, cha or step, step, cha-cha-cha.

Although Cha Cha is most often danced to a music with a Latin sound and feel, it can be danced to any music with a good beat and written in 4/4 time. From pop and rock to country, funk, and even hip hop.

Cha Cha achieved worldwide popularity in pretty short time. Being adaptable to many music genres it truly is a dance of today.

Sampling Synthesizers – Their ...

A synthesizer is an instrument that can generate just about any kind of sound which makes it quite easy for a musician to create new, exciting music. Since its invention, the synthesizer has been a boon for musicians and development over the years has led to more advanced and sophisticated models. The sampling synthesizer is one such model.

In many ways, the sampling synthesizer is quite similar to a more standard synthesizer, but with certain unique traits. Rather than producing original sounds, the sampling synthesizer reproduces sounds which have been recorded or sampled into its on-board storage. These sounds may be sampled from instruments, nature or other producers of sound. The sampling synthesizer’s configuration will determine the manner in which sounds are played back. Several storage mechanisms are available, with RAM being the most common and user friendly. This should give you some insight into how these instruments work.

A sampling synthesizer (or sample based synthesizer) works differently from the additive or subtractive synthesis used in other synthesizers. subtractive synthesizers filter square or sawtooth waves to generate their sounds. Additive synthesizers assemble their sounds by adding together different sine waves.

The effectiveness of a sampling synthesizer is dependent upon the volume of the sample sounds it has since it uses these sound samples to reproduce sounds of natural instruments. The high price of computer memory greatly limited the number of sounds that a sampling synthesizer held when it was first developed, but over the years, as memory chips have become less and less expensive, the amount of sounds samples increased so that now there is much greater flexibility and quality to the instrument.

Sampling synthesizers store sounds as pre-recorded samples rather than sounds recorded in real-time and use less processing power than a digital synthesizers. This makes them a much better instrument than either an analog or digital synthesizer.

The polyphony of the sampling synthesizer is higher than an analog synthesizer since it does not have to duplicate its circuitry to allow more sound patterns to be generated.

Initially, the sampling synthesizer was incredibly pricey. With the introduction of models such as the Roland D50, the instrument began to become more mainstream and obtainable for the non-wealthy musician. The Korg M1 is another good example, particularly in that the workstation concept was here first seen.

Stevie Wonder used a sampling synthesizer in 1976 when recording the album “Secret Life of Plants.” Wonder created complex melodies and rhythms from sampled sounds of nature and used a sampled bird chirp as the lead sound in the song “The First Garden.

Still Life, New and Old – The Art ...

Still life, as a category of paintings, are not the only subjects this artist paints, but they are one of his most outstanding themes. His use of color and sunlight on the apples, pears, grapes, flowers, glass, baskets, etc., make interesting contrasts in the paintings and lead the viewer into the room where the subject sits. Many of his oil paintings can be seen in offices and galleries and homes.

In his painting “Daffodils and Grapes,” Mr. Rosenthal exhibits a masterly use of painting of textures where the smooth texture of the grapes contrasts to the uneven texture of the linen tablecloth. The cool smoothness of the glass vase contrasts with the lively, crinkled daffodils. This use of textures makes Mr. Rosenthal’s work outstanding.

Another interesting composition that shows such contrasts is “Fruit Harvest,” where a well used basket is next to a cool metal goblet. The goblet alone is an astounding piece of work – the artist used a wide variety of hues from very dark to nearly white to express the metal piece. In the foreground are pears that have fallen out of the basket – one feels if one put his finger on them, they would feel like ripe pears, in contrast to the hard shiny apple in front of them.

Another still life from this artist, “Fruit Harvest II,” features a bottle of wine, a bowl of fruit spilling out onto a beautifully textured tablecloth. The dark background and wine bottle, contrasted by the bright fruit and tablecloth almost puts the viewer in the room where that scene is. One can imagine the heavy drapes and elaborate furniture.

In his painting “Teapot and Fruit,” the artist leads us into perhaps a kitchen where apples, grapes and a rough hand made teapot rest on a work table. The dark blue of the background contrasts well with the light colored teapot and table, and the roughness of the teapot is in contrast to the smoothness of the fruits. Light barely comes through the dark background – perhaps a heavy cloth covers a window.

Soft pears in the foreground of “Roses from the Garden” give depth and contrast to this painting showing the difference in textures with the hard glass bottle and frilly roses in that bottle. The brightness of the three different colored roses also contrasts with the very dark background. And the dark bottle that holds the roses is beautifully painted – although it is dark, it still pops out from the dark background because of the light falling on it.

The subject matter of these paintings is similar to old masters paintings from the 17th and 18th century, but the style of painting lends a more modern touch. The artist obviously studied old still life paintings, but painted the subjects in his own style, a bright and lively style, in spite of the still subjects and shadowy areas of the paintings.
