Cannes Film Festival 2008 Competitors

Entre les murs – Teacher Franois Marin and his colleagues are preparing for another school year teaching at a racially mixed inner city high school in Paris. The teachers talk to each other about their prospective students, both the good and the bad. The teachers collectively want to inspire their students, but each teacher is an individual who will do things in his or her own way to achieve the results they desire. They also have differing viewpoints on the students themselves, and how best to praise and discipline them. The administration of the school tries to be as fair as possible, which includes having student representatives sit on the student evaluation committee. Marin’s class this year of fourteen and fifteen year olds is no different than previous years, although the names and faces have changed. Marin tries to get through to his students, sometimes with success and sometimes resulting in utter failure. Even Marin has his breaking point, which may result in him doing things he would probably admit to himself are wrong. But after all is said and done, there is next year and another group of students.

Gomorra – Don Ciro (Gianfelice Imparato) is a timid middleman, who distributes money to the families of imprisoned clan members. When making a delivery, he is ambushed by two angry clan members with an obvious grudge against their fellows; there is a feud within the clan. Wanting to save his own skin, he later offers to defect to their side. They explain to him their families were murdered by the clan and want retribution, and that they have no need for a money-carrier. Instead, Ciro leads them to the location where he is given the money for distribution. The pair raid the place, killing everyone but Ciro, and take the money. Ciro quietly walks off to an uncertain future.

Blindness – The film starts out with a plague of white blindness that is spreading throughout a city at a pretty rapid pace. Its different from regular blindness, in the fact that the blind person usually sees nothing but black; while these infected people see white, milky nothingness instead. Fearing that this strange plague is highly contagious; the government panics and begins sending infected people to a quarantine zone that happens to be inside of an old, abandoned mental hospital with three wards. It is, in fact, contagious; as we see the blindness spread from a single, random person to a guy that helps him and then steals his car, to an eye doctor (Ruffalo) and then to all of his patients. The only person who seems immune to this outbreak is the eye doctors wife (Moore), who accompanies him to the quarantine facility- lying about her condition. The old sanitarium turns out to be a cramped, squalid hellhole and the more people that are brought in, the more problems start to occur.

Palermo Shooting – In every serious artist’s life there’re great oscillations and changes. Years of great and masterful work are followed by long passages of creative drought and emptiness. But every artist who takes himself seriously one day must understand and face facts that his best years are over and it would be wise to drop the pencil and leave the field for a new, emerging generation. After seeing Wender’s latest “work” at its premiere in Berlin last night I felt that everyone in the audience quietly shared the same thoughts about this flick: That this can hardly be called a film anymore – but is a preposterous, embarrassing, empty and painful blow to anyone who liked some of the better of Wender’s works in the past.

Serbis – A drama that follows the travails of the Pineda family in the Filipino city of Angeles. Bigamy, unwanted pregnancy, possible incest and bothersome skin irritations are all part of their daily challenges, but the real “star” of the show is an enormous, dilapidated movie theater that doubles as family business and living space. At one time a prestige establishment, the theater now runs porn double bills and serves as a meeting ground for hustlers of every conceivable persuasion. The film captures the sordid, fetid atmosphere, interweaving various family subplots with the comings and goings of customers, thieves and even a runaway goat while enveloping the viewer in a maelstrom of sound, noise and continuous motion.

Synecdoche, New York – Theater director Caden Cotard is mounting a new play. Fresh off of a successful production of Death of a Salesman, he has traded in the suburban blue-hairs and regional theater of Schenectady for the cultured audiences and bright footlights of Broadway. Armed with a MacArthur grant and determined to create a piece of brutal realism and honesty, something into which he can put his whole self, he gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in Manhattan’s theater district. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a small mockup of the city outside. As the city inside the warehouse grows, Caden’s own life veers wildly off the tracks. The shadow of his ex-wife Adele, a celebrated painter who left him years ago for Germany’s art scene, sneers at him from every corner. Somewhere in Berlin, his daughter Olive is growing up under the questionable guidance of Adele’s friend, Maria. He’s helplessly driving his marriage to actress Claire into the ground. Sammy Barnathan, the actor Caden has hired to play himself within the play, is a bit too perfect for the part, and is making it difficult for Caden to revive his relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel. Meanwhile, his therapist, Madeline Gravis, is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. His is second daughter, Ariel, is disabled. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. As the years rapidly pass, Caden buries himself deeper into his masterpiece. Populating the cast and crew with doppelgangers, he steadily blurs the line between the world of the play and that of his own deteriorating reality. As he pushes the limits of his relationships, both personally and professionally, a change in creative direction arrives in Millicent Weems, a celebrated theater actress who may offer Caden the break he needs.

Cannes Film Festival Competitors In 2007

4 luni, 3 saptamni si 2 zile – 4 Months,3 Weeks and 2 Days is not a movie for everyone. It can be very strong for a sensible person. But, this is a challenging and fascinating movie. I said this movie is not for everyone because it has very hard scenes. But,those scenes are completely justified and the thing I most appreciated on them was the realism they show. A very strong realism that other movies do not show. So,this is also a brave movie. This film has a perfect creation of atmosphere and it made me feel I was inside that scenes. The performances are phenomenal. They are so natural that the actors do not seem to be acting. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is a spectacular film which is brave, fascinating and a challenge to the spectator. One of the best films of 2007.

Paranoid Park – The teenager and skateboarder Alex is interviewed by Detective Richard Lu that is investigating the death of a security guard in the rail yards severed by a train that was apparently hit by a skate board. While dealing with the separation process of his parents and the sexual heat of his virgin girlfriend Jennifer, Alex writes his last experiences in Paranoid Park with his new acquaintances and how the guard was killed, trying to relieve his feeling of guilty from his conscience.

Les chansons d’amour – Ismael (Louis Garrel, the Gallic version of the adorable young Hugh Grant), lives with Julie (Ludivine Sagnier). Alice (Clotilde Hesme), who works with Ismael, shares their bed and Alice’s affections. On a night of tragedy, Jeanne, unawares, hooks up with Gwendal (Yannick Renier), whose teen-aged brother Erwann (Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet) is the only one who can bring a shattered Ismael back to life, in the most romantic man-on-man love scene since Rupert Grave’s Alec Scudder climbed through Maurice’s bedroom window 20 years ago. With rain-slicked streets, coffee and cigarettes, references to a dozen French classics, a haunting score and the best balcony scene since “Romeo and Juliet,” this low-budget charmer, which has become a cult favorite in France with the under-25 set, is an “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” for the 21st Century.

Milyang – It reminded them of the movie ‘The Rapture’. If you’ve missed that one, you have my sympathies. One of the best original stories I’ve ever been lucky enough to partake of. I agree that the lead role’s acting was excellent. I agree that it was very realistic in a lot of ways. I agree that it didn’t pull punches. But what am i really left with? I’ve seen thousands of movies, literally. It’s not as if my story telling vocabulary is limited to happily ever after endings, middles or beginnings. I love a very wide range of movies/ways of telling stories through cinematics. This movie had so little payoff for me that i felt the need to write this. And, it’s not as if i haven’t seen slow movies. I love ‘stranger than paradise’ and I could name many more ‘off beat’ films. I don’t feel enriched or transformed or entertained by watching this movie. But I am glad my vlc player has a fast forward; consider yourselves informed.

Mogari no mori – The movie opened true to Kawase’s penchant for capturing moving air. Here, we see lush greenery on tree tops dancing to the motion of wind, and vast open fields where blades of grass sway back and forth when caressed by the breeze. It’s like watching a National Geographic episode of forests and greenery before the opening credits kicked in to start the film proper. I even suspected that M Night Shyamalan could have paid homage in his The Happening, which also had plenty of such shots put into it. The story tells of the relationship that formed between Shigeki (Shigeki Uda) and Machiko (Machiko Ono), the former an old man in an elderly home who has been aloof after the lost of his wife some 33 years ago. 33 years is an extremely long time, and to miss someone for that long, well, you know how strong his emotions are to his wife. On the other hand, Machiko is a staff at the same elderly home, but she too is grieving internally for the loss of her son, and her husband squarely puts the responsibility and blame on her petite shoulders.

Import/Export – Whereas Ulrich Seidl in “Hundstage”, his first non-documentary film took the hottest days of the year for the description of apathy, brutality and humiliation in society, his new film takes place in a cold scenery. And that in a double sense: While in the East (mostly in the Ukraine) there is a deep winter climate, in the West (Vienna) the relations and the social environment are characterized by coldness. Seidl’s films have always been controversial because of the docu-like unrelenting gaze of their pictures, which abstain from any commentary and because of their description of social milieus and phenomenons one usually does not perceive or doesn’t want to. All that applies also to “Import Export”. Here we find scenes of grotesque disgust, in which the spectator is ashamed of watching and blaming the camera for its rigidity. On the other hand these films create some kind of maelstrom, which is difficult to escape from. There always is the question: does he exploit his protagonists or not. Well, everyone has to find his own answer: I don’t think so because showing the situation does not mean its denunciation. The story depicts in two unrelated strands two diametrical movements: From East to West and vice versa. The title already refers to the films main subject: The goods-like character, which the globalized capitalistic world imposes on the people. The society is in a desperate state ; nevertheless it is Seidl’s most human film. He seems to show empathy for his two protagonists and even if there is no sort of Happy-End – the film has no real end at all,but just leaves its figures alone- the hope remains, that they have got a little bit of strength and decisiveness, which could make a more self-defined life in the future possible. Or maybe not. Every Film of Seidl makes you leave the cinema thinking, that the whole world and the people are in a desperate and hopeless state, but here we have at least little moments of tenderness, in which we see people fighting for their dignity. A rigorous film for the lovers of contemporary Austrian film (Albert, Glawogger, Haneke) and definitely no “entertainment”.

2007 Cannes Film Festival Competitors

Climates: A dowdy university instructor Isa is an inattentive husband to his younger, TV-business wife Bahar. Self-absorbed and selfish, Isa only communicates in the most rudimentary way, while she, similarly, detaches into crying jags and juvenile behavior.

Marie Antoinette: “All eyes will be on you,” says the Austrian duchess, Maria Theresa to her youngest daughter Marie Antoinette. The film, marketed for a teen audience, is an impressionistic retelling of Marie’s life as a young queen in the opulent and eccentric court at Versailles. The film focuses on Marie Antoinette, as she matures from a teenage bride to a young woman and eventual queen of France.

When I was a singer: Alain Moreau sings for one of the few remaining dance-bands. Though something of an idol amongst his female audience he has a melancholic awareness of the slow disappearance of that audience and of his advancing years. He is completely knocked off balance when he meets strikingly attractive and much younger businesswoman Marion. She seems distant and apparently otherwise involved but soon shows quiet signs of reciprocating his interest. A brief dalliance turns into something much more complicated and he starts to employ her services as an estate agent by announcing he suddenly must move house.

Colossal Youth: This is scrambled story telling in slow motion. Often I found myself thinking about Beckett. The dialogs appear irrelevant, having to do with mundane personal life experiences, friends and relatives. These are poorly educated people after all. In fact one better pay close attention to the prate. It is through small revelations and asides in conversations that we pick up the clues to the life of Ventura and those close to him. The quiet and unpretentious acting, the extended takes, the absence of broad movements, the occasional lengthy silence, all can be soporific. Yet one needs to listen carefully.

Fast Food Nation: Don Anderson is the Mickey’s food restaurant chain’s Marketing Director. He is the inventor of the “Big One” the hamburger best seller of Mickey’s. An independent research reports the presence of cow’s feces in the Big One. So Don is sent to Cody, Colorado, to verify if the slaughterhouse, main supplier of Mickey’s, is efficient as it appears and the production process is regular. During his investigations he discovers the horrible truth behind a simple hamburger; the reality is not like we think it is. Don discovers that the mass production system involves from the temp workers like Amber, to the exploitation of Mexican irregular immigrants. It is not only the meat that is crush in the mincing machine, but all our society.

Flanders: In a gray and un-charming part of France, these farming people live. Life is quiet. You start a relation with the girl in the neighbor house. Life would have remained quiet if it wasn’t for war. There’s a shocking contrast here, between the silent life and the brutal battles in Africa. It directly affects also life at home, in an almost as brutal way. Can the things we’ve done, those wounds, be healed? Maybe they can after all. A very tense drama, which is sometimes hard to watch. Well acted, and very far from mainstream action, especially when it comes to psychological violence.

Top 5 Classical Music Festivals

Copyright (c) 2009 Jason Boehle

Any classical musician or lover of classical music will tell you that Europe was the birth place to most of the classical greats we know and appreciate today.

Unlike poets, writers, or artists, classical composers and musicians achieved notoriety for their works within their life time, and their music continues to flood our air waves. Some of greatest composers of all time, Tchaikovsky who wrote many great plays including the Nutcracker to Vivaldi who wrote The Four Seasons, were born and trained in Europe.

Any trip to Europe should include a live classical music performance, preferably at a festival. Today, there are many classical festivals to choose from, all celebrating the long European lineage of legends and looking forward to what the classical world holds in its future.

1. Bach Festival (www.bachfestleipzig.de ) Leipzig, Germany- Enjoy the sounds of the renowned composer with performances by the Academy of Ancient Music. There will also be performances from Handel and Vivaldi. Free daytime organ recitals will be available.

2. Puccini Festival (www.puccinifestival.it ) Torre del Lago, Italy- To satisfy your craving for high notes and drama, treat yourself to an opera performance. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Puccini’s birth, the Puccinni Festival is full of performances from Puccinni’s repertoire. In addition to seeing great performances, you will be able to take a tour of Puccini’s lake side villa, which has been preserved as a museum, open to the public.

3. Salzburg Festival (www.salzburgfestival.at) Salzburg, Austria- Home to some of the most impressive churches and performance halls, Austria offers a culture rich in classical music. The Vienna Philharmonic will perform many works, including music by Wagner and Messiaen.

4. Monteverdi Festival(www.teatroponchielli.it) Cremona, Italy – In honor of one of the godfathers of Opera, Claudio Monteverdi, this 3 week festival mixes in many of the more famous 17 century classical works with the dramatic romanticism of the time period.

5. Richard Wagner Festival (www.bayreuther-festspiele.de) Bayreuth, Germany – Listen to the ear pleasing notes of Christian Thielemann who sets the atmosphere with the Ring Cycle. While you’re there, visit the eloquent Baroque Opera House and immerse yourself in the Hermitage gardens.

Europe has a strong appreciation for classical music, so seeing a live performance of your favorite classical performer is feasible for a quick European jaunt or a lengthy tour of the continent. There are both expensive performances and free performances because Europeans truly believe that classical music should be shared amongst everyone.

Financial Tips at Kentucky Craft Shows

Everyone I know aims to be financially free someday. They want to someday be on top of their growing finances. Being financially free meaning having stability or It is where one is making money work for himself. Financial freedom is being able to relax and enjoy life by not worrying too much about where you will get the money to pay for your basic necessities. Financial freedom is where you can increase your money without doing anything.

Financial freedom is achieved when you have more assets and fewer liabilities, or your income exceeds your expenses which leave you with a positive cash flow and some savings. Financial literacy teaches us to invest our excess money through various growth funds or mutual funds. This is in opposing to what was earlier taught to us to “save our money in the banks”. Mutual funds are places where your money can grow because it will be used to finance other companies.

There are still a lot of us who possess the old line of thinking which is that money is the root of all evil. I say the opposite. Be obsessed with money. Eat money, think money and live money. In this way, you will learn to love the concept of money and learn more about the subject. In this way, he/ she will have a full understanding on the subject and in the end look for ways to earn his money column. One should need to be financial literate if he seeks to be financially free someday.

Financial freedom gives us a preview on how to create wise spending habits. After receiving our income we should save or invest first. This is versus the habit of paying our bills first and then saving what was left. I know that it is important to pay our bills but this practice can lead us a disciplined life in terms of investing and saving. Giving tithes or 10% of your monthly income to churches is also a teaching under financial freedom.

There are still a lot of ways to learn about financial freedom. Check out your neighborhood’s local listings for events and time schedules.

The Wine & Cheese of Italy: Off the Beaten Path in New York, New York

Italy is the country known for its good taste, fine gourmet, romantic places and great Italian cheeses. We are knowledgeable of Mozzarella and Parmesan- two great cheese varieties that only came from Italy. Italy is agreat city to be it is even one of my “must-go to” travel destinations. Apart from all of these there is still one reason why you should love Italy and this: the Italian cheese and wine combo.

The Wine and Cheese of Italy: Off the Beaten Path is an event in New York, New York that features the famous cheeses in Italy and their corresponding wine counterparts. The festival will feature 8 different kinds of wine and 6 different kinds of cheese- all for tasting and sampling. These varainats will be the examples for the wine and cheese tasting class. The event will feature two respecatble persons on the industry: Dilek Caner and Chris Munsey.

Caner will introduce the fine grape variety of Italy that makes their wine taste so good. Musey on the other hand will discuss the concept of artisanal cheeses and how they differ to commercially produced cheeses. One interesting class that Munsey likes to talk about in his class is the art of Cheese tasting.

Basically cheese and wine pairings have a Light on Light formula. It means that the lighter, softer and more buttery flavored cheeses are to be paired with light colored wines or white wines. Heavier, darker and nuttier flavor of cheese is great to compare with darker and bolder wines.

A Cheese clock is a cheese plate that is fun to place together. It is achieved through putting different types of cheeses on a huge plate following a quadrant which houses the 4 types of cheeses. Start your cheese clock from the bottom or the 6 o clock quadrant and work your way up, gradually increasing the boldness and heaviness of the cheese.

It is a “Momsie Thing” at Maryland

Every 2nd Sunday of May is an extraordinary day for every woman in the world. We celebrate Mother’s Day in recognition of a mother’s hardship and sacrifice, it is usually held every 2nd Sunday of May every year. As a quick history, Mother’s Day originated from ancient Greek and Romans. Greeks favor this day in honor of Rhea the wife of Cornus in Greek mythology.

Every special day has its own origin or story to tell. This usually tells the main person (who created it) and for what reason. Anna Jarvis who was born in Webster town in Taylor County, West Virginia is known to be as the founder of Mother’s Day. Though Anna was never married and never had a child of her own, she is measured as a mom- an apt title for the lady who worked very hard to make Mother’s Day possible.

Nowadays, Mother’s day is celebrated in several countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States. This is the day where people take the time and the chance to thank and appreciate their moms, who loved and took care of them. It is a day to distinguish and regard the mother- the woman has dedicated her life and career and someone who is willing to give up everything just to see her children happy.

There are many known ways to celebrate Mother’s Day. Some treat the whole family to dinner. Some moms give time for them or break free from their daily routine by doing the stuffs that they love to do. It’s also a flower giving day where kids and husbands show regards to their moms or partners by giving them flowers Some children help in cleaning the house and taking care of their younger siblings on Mother’s Day. Once in a year moms feel special and they can do anything that pleases them.

Mother’s Day isn’t always for mothers; it’s also for the women out there making a difference. To be a mother doesn’t always mean you have to conceive. Mother’s Day is a day to salute all the women out there. May they be solitary or wedded; every woman is entitled to have fun this day.

The Strawberry Festival will feature various fun parts for the whole family. There will be Arts & Crafts festival and a free lecture and lessons that focus on Strawberry and its uses.

Lessons will be given that cater to bring public awareness on the historical and cultural significance of this plump and delicious fruit. Strawberries are plentiful in this part of the country, given that Maine enjoys a cool weather that prompts the cultivation of ripe and succulent strawberries. Strawberries are mainly popularized through the popular song from the Beatles, “Strawberry Fields Forever”.

In culinary, the strawberries are best enjoyed when combined with chocolate and cheese. I am very fond of watching culinary films and the Disney film: Ratatouille is just one of my favorites. In here we can see Remy the rat chef who is so good at cooking. He was very happy at one moment in the film when he instantly discovered the divine flavor that can come off in combining strawberry and cheese. He says that there are fireworks in his head when he tastes these two ingredients together. I totally agree as I tasted the divine combination too before.

Chocolates are also more enjoyable if combined with strawberry. They are both sweet tasting and pleasurable to eat. Chocolates are likewise sweet tasting and they are both seen as romance food. Why? Perhaps because of the strawberries red color which connotes love or the heart? Or probably because of its shape which is also like a heart if to be viewed closely.

At the McRoberts Strawberry Festival at Van, Kentucky there is lots of strawberries to taste and lots of reasons to learn about its history and its origins. Visit the Strawberry Festival and learn more about this delightful fruit.

In craft fairs there is usually an art school section where kids can have fun and bond with fellow kids while being creative. It is the spot where moms can shop without worrying for their little ones because as well know, craft fairs are for the whole family to enjoy. Craft fairs are flea markets where second hand goodies and bargain stuffs can be bought at cheap prices. It is also a place where homemade and handmade items can be bought. Live music, dance performances and entertainment are also provided in craft shows to further enrich the shopping experience. Craft fairs are indeed places great for having fun!

Hands on crafting or art lessons for kids are the usual way of making our little ones occupied while we shop during crafts fair. It is like a mini-art school that usually last for about an hour or so, so by the time you’re done with your shopping you’re little kid is also done with her lessons. This idea was developed so that each and every member of the family can have fun and enjoy the event.

One example of a craft that is very applicable for young kids that will surely leave them occupied is making edible necklace. It is really a yummy treat! The first step is to prepare the ingredients. You will need a piece of licorice and cereal loops. Place each loop onto the licorice leaving room at both ends. Tie the licorice after around the kid’s neck. The kids will have fun doing and eating their sweet necklaces. It is also great for children’s group activities at parties.

During crafts fair, kids are given huge sheets of blank paper and coloring materials where they can draw, sketch, color and be creative with. They love using stamp pads, chalks and paints in their art works. Kids are very creative in their own little ways. Origami is also popular to keep kids busy during craft fairs.

Red Rabbit Craft Show Event in Arcadia

What started as a collective effort by a group of friends became Red Rabbit. They would get together for lunches and to talk about all things that are related to craftworks; most of them were artists and artisans. It was only a matter of when they decided to try and host their own craft show for their products.

With the success of the first show held last December over at the Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge, we’ve settled on holding the next installment on July 19th. This time, the venue will be at the impressive 127-acre Los Angeles Arboretum in Arcadia.

Around fifty artists and craftspeople from Southern California will attend the Arts and Crafts Market. Be amazed as you see all the various works crafted in glass, ceramics, fiber arts, jewelry, and other items of interest. I will emphasize that there will be a lot of handmade items; fine arts pieces and crafted paraphernalia, as well as indie work in the mix.

We’re trying to go for a good mix of all items. We’ll continue to accept other applications until we have filled up and completed every category in the event. Plus we also plan to organize some craft workshops for kids, as well. Don’t want them bored now.

Set-up of the booths will begin at around 8:30am; the show itself would be from 9:30 to 3:30pm. The event will be held indoors in a hall adorned by beautiful gardens. Fees are at an affordable rtate, and there will be an additional fee of 15% of sales as per the requirement of the Arboretum. Organizers will also provide a, eight foot long, two-and-a-half foot wide table complete with two chairs.
