Terry Pratchett’s Unseen Academicals

UK’s best-selling author Terry Pratchett’s latest novel Unseen Academicals (2009) is a parody on the cultural phenomenon of European football (soccer) and everything that surrounds it. As such, it may be better understood and enjoyed by Europeans than Americans; in particular since football hooliganism, a distinctly UK phenomenon, plays a central role in the story.

But really, the book is about so much more than football (soccer) and makes for fabulous entertainment for anybody, American or British. It is also a book about fashion super models (and their association with football super stars); pies of every conceivable variety (and their association with football fans); as well as goblins and orcs (association to football unknown).

In typically characteristic Pratchett-fashion, everything on the Discworld mirrors things in our own world with a slight and hilarious twist. For example, a tail-gate market on the Discworld becomes a cart-tail market. And instead of cheerleaders, there are naiads dancing on the sidelines.

The book has many heroes, in particular a goblin-turned-orc by the name of Mr. Nutt. Because he’s one of only a handful of surviving orcs on the Discworld, two of the world’s most powerful leaders take him under their wings to help him save himself as well as his dying race.

It should be mentioned that these two enlightened world leaders, Lady Margolotta and Lord Vetinari have previously done the same to help werewolves, rock trolls, golems, and vampires become accepted members of society. Margolotta herself being one of the latter, or so rumor has it.

Mr. Nutt gets sent from Lady Margolotta’s Uberwald to Lord Vetinari’s Ankh-Morpork and assigned the task to accumulate ‘worth’ in human society. In doing so, Nutt gains many loyal friends and admirers in his workplace, the Unseen University. Co-worker Trev Likely goes to any length to defend his orc friend, and the head mistress of the Night Kitchen, Miss Glenda Sugarbean (creator of the crusty onion pie) becomes a staunch admirer, which later leads to a budding romance.

By impressing his superiors at Unseen University with his knowledge and knack for strategic thinking, Mr. Nutt eventually gets placed in charge of coaching the school’s new football team. And then one thing leads to another.

Unseen Academicals may be a parody on the phenomenon of European football (soccer), as well as a number of other things thrown in for good measure, but soccer fan or not, this book will give you many hours of joyous reading and barrels of laughs.

Mrs. Hellman resides in North Carolina with her husband and their three boys. A copywriter by profession, she writes book reviews as a hobby. Visit the website named after The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett, where you can order Unseen Academicals or any of the other 36 novels in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series.

Enjoy a travel to Leipzig: classical music, culture, shopping and good food

When planning a trip to Berlin, always consider short travels to beautiful destinations around. A visit in Potsdam is the traditional choice, but here is another great offer: Leipzig. Actually, why not both?

In many ways, Berlin and Leipzig complement each other. When speaking about Leipzig, it is, first of all, its unique architecture, music, and shopping that make it attractive.

Like Berlin, Leipzig (pronounced ly’pe-tsig) is a city in East Germany, but in a different federal state, Saxony.

Most important tour sites are in the Leipzig’s center, and may be visited in one day. That means it’s possible to go there from Berlin and return to Berlin the same day. Going one way by train takes one hour and 20 minutes only.

Tourist Information Bureau in Leipzig is located near the main train station, and is open every day.

If you plan to stay in Leipzig more than a day, go to the bureau and buy a “Leipzig Card” that gives you free travel on public transportation and discounts in most major city’s attractions. Three-day ticket price is 18.50 Euros per person, or 34 Euros for a couple with two children.

Boys who sing Bach

So what’s so special about Leipzig?

First of all, it’s the “City of Music”. Leipzig is regarded as the city of Johann Sebastian Bach. The great composer was not born in Leipzig, but definitely created his wonderful music there.

Representing Bach more than anything else is Thomas Church, where he served as musical director and played the organ almost 30 years, until the day he died. The famous boys’ choir which he conducted, more than 250 years ago, sings Bach until now, in the same church. Listening to a concert of the choir, called in German “Thomanerchor”, is a wonderful experience for music lovers.

Bach’s music is also played often elsewhere in Leipzig. For example, in the City’s Opera hall and in Bach’s Museum.

Musicians and museums

Speaking of classical music, Leipzig is not only the city of Bach. It is also the city of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, the great romantic composer. The house where he lived and died, at Goldschmidt Street 12, is now a museum honoring the composer and work.

Another famous composer, Richard Wagner, was born in Leipzig, and the composer Robert Schumann lived there. Both are memorialized by museums as well.

Where do malls come from?

Besides music, what makes Leipzig unique is being a pioneer in commerce. The first shopping arcade in the world, known as Passage, was built in Leipzig in the beginning of the 20th century.

The passage was actually the predecessor of the modern mall. Leipzig developed this kind of salesmanship into an art, and created an exclusive Passages’ architecture.

At least a dozen of these elegant shopping centers is active there until today and worth visiting. Window shopping in the Passages is possible at any time, but if you really want to buy something do not go there Sundays, when most shops are closed.

Luther and Napoleon

Speaking of history and of Thomas Church (Thomaskirche, in German), this building was the place where Martin Luther, founder of the Reformation movement, addressed at Leipzig residents 1539 and convinced them into Protestantism.

In addition to the Thomas Church, the Nikolai (St Nicholas) Church is another tourists’ attraction. The church was the first base of the quiet protests in 1989, which ended in toppling the Berlin Wall.

10 minutes drive from the city center by tram (line 15) another historical site is located: the monument commemorating the defeat of Napoleon at the “Battle of Nations”, 1813. The German Kaiser Wilhelm the 2nd unveiled the huge monument, the largest in Europe, on the battle’s 100th anniversary.

For a small entrance fee, you may climb to the top of the monument for observation. There is a museum as well.

A communist point of view

The best view of Leipzig is available from the top of the tallest house in town, which is located in Augustus Square. The edifice is a remnant of the Communist spectacular building style. Today it is leased to the German Broadcasting Company MDR.

Leipzig was devastated by the allied bombings in World War II, and was not much of a city during the communist regime. However, since the re-unification of Germany, it has been renovated and restored.

Food and literature

In Leipzig center, there are an abundance of restaurants, pubs and bars. The food is good and the prices are not high. The most famous restaurant is “Auerbach’s cellar”, located in Grimmaische street 2.

The place attracts many tourists, especially German literature lovers, because it is mentioned in Goethe’s play Faust. However, it serves a delicious traditional Saxon menu as well.

In addition, there are a lot of greenery and water, a walking distance from midtown.

A list of all beautiful places in Leipzig, many photos, and walking routes are to be found in my site www.berlinwalking.com.

Reminiscing What the Beatles Were

The Beatles had been the founding fathers of present day rock and roll. Their influence had rooted itself in to the music of today’s generation and while other people would not notice this, fans of the Beatles would very well jump into it. They were respected, well-known, highly acclaimed, popular and enjoyed being looked up by their peers.Their achievements remain unparalleled and no one as of now, could be compared to the achievements the Beatles had received. They had their humble beginnings in Europe, during the 1960′s but through this, they managed to spread their tunes far and wide, even across the globe! Pop charts and record sellers could not keep up with the demand of Beatles music the people were asking them of.

There are a lot of avid fans everywhere. Beatles’ music is not limited to just the age of the listeners once, because a lot of their fans are not even members of the same era where they starting and rampant. Their music is so universal that it is appreciated in a lot of cultures and eras; this gave them a lot of respect and admirers. People started collecting memorabilia, albums some of their rare and published ones and even copies of their instruments. The Beatles’ mania has proven to be timeless and one big serious business. There are a lot of serious fans out there that have proven their passion through their actions.

The Beatles Experience was made to give tribute to this great band. It is an awesome event that has made huge waves and has garnered the attention of fans and non-fans alike. Whether they be young and old. Skinny or fat. Or anything in between, as long as you love the Beatles, you are very much welcome.

Band after band compete for the Beatles Experience, where their music and soul collide to form a beat influenced by the Beatles themselves. Music genres and age may vary but the experience in itself is one awesome conglomerate of power and pride. The 60′s look doesn’t work, but the music certainly does.

The Beatles mania will continue to live on. Despite the adversities of time and new generations of music, there will always be people who will understand the soul of the Beatles. And those who hold this knowledge is key to the Beatles’ immortality.

An Overview of a Farmers Market

Farmers market is venues where sellers sell their stuffs at an open place. Farmers market is a special venue where you can purchase fresh, safe and organic produce from the sellers or farmers barnyards. It is guaranteed that stocks being sold here are fresh and safe because they are taken cared of and cultivated in humane way and with using only the safest and right fertilizers. It is also deemed better to shop at a farmers market since prices are reportedly lowered because you are dealing with the first hand distributor.

There are a lot of varieties that can be purchased at farmers markets. Some of them are vegetables or root crops. These kinds are often better looking than store bought contemporaries because of the care that the farmer executed in producing these crops. They usually look bigger in size and improved in color unlike other vegetables. They are usually heavier and bigger in size and possess a richer color.

Honey is another typical produce that can be found at a farmers market. Honey bee farms often sell their honey products on glass jars. There are honey bee farm owners whose business is to provide the public with 100% authentic and pure honey syrup. It is not just a typical grocery purchased honey that may be added with preservatives to last. An authentic honey is judged by its color, consistency and taste.

Fresh jams or fruit preserves are also popular hits at a farmers market. In here, fruit orchard owners make jams or fruit preserves that are classic favorite sandwich spreads. They are created and made by owners of fruit orchards who sometimes use the seasoned fruits to make their preserves. Aside from the jams, seasoned fruits for sale are also seen at a farmers market.

There are still a lot of stuffs that can be bought at a farmers market. Now that we know some of them, we know how to save a bit of our familys food budget by opting to buy at a farmers market.

Large Plastic Easter Eggs Can Be Reused

While everyone associates plastic eggs with Easter, large eggs can be used for a variety of other things besides filling with candy. Other than finding a large plastic Easter egg in the Easter basket, here are some other uses which work quite well.

Organize Your Household

A large plastic Easter egg makes a good household container. Here’s some uses to think about. If the egg does not have holes in it, use it to hold smaller amounts of paint or finishes.

You can store push-pins and thumbtacks in these eggs so they don’t get lost or mixed in with other items. The eggs are good for storing screws when you are working on a project such as the computer or a piece of furniture. Paper clips, pins, and clips always seem to get lost in the junk drawer. This would work to keep them at least in one place.

Batteries also work well with large plastic Easter eggs since they also tend to get lost when needed. If you poke a few holes in one, it can be filled with potpourri to use as an air freshener.

More Personal Solutions

Back in the day, stores used to use containers shaped just like your large plastic easter eggs to sell pantyhose. You can adopt this same idea for your bedroom by keeping your pantyhose in your plastic easter eggs to prevent them from laddering whilst they are in storage. Plus put your loose jewellery in them whilst travelling to avoid scuff marks on precious items.

Your large plastic easter eggs are also good to keep loose change in and eye liner brushes / mascara brushes rather than having them loose in your bag where they could get damaged or dirty.

Other Uses

Here are a few other uses for the large plastic Easter egg which don’t fall into the categories above. Use the eggs for kids games such as color matching or memory games with something inside each egg.

Use half an egg for a scoop or mould to use at the beach for sand castles. The dome shape given by using half an easter egg on a sand castle can add some great detail to any castle you build in the sand.

For Christmas or birthdays wrap the egg up in ribbons or other decorations and fill it with a small gift. Poke two holes in opposite sides, run a string of lights through the eggs and seal the eggs. This works as a handmade patio light set or party light set.

We have looked at countless different ways to reuse your large plastic easter eggs for various different handy solutions. But as you can tell, you are only limited by your imagination.
