Guitar and music in general is personally one of the most enjoyable hobbies you can pick up. Music is one of the few mediums that can totally cross language and cultural barriers. It’s extremely inspiring when you blast out a power chord through an amplifier at a rocking volume. Or strumming your acoustic at a party and having the whole room singing along with you. Actually being able to play songs and even compose your own is an inexpressible feeling. So here are some easy guitar lessons to get you going.

One more thing to the newbies before we start. Do not give up and have patience. I will never forget grabbing my first guitar for the first time knowing I would be jamming to my favorite CDs immediately. Boy was I wrong. I couldn’t even get a single note to sound out clearly and definitely couldn’t hold multiple fingers to form a chord. I didn’t give up, I adjusted my goals and stuck to it.

Your fingers are in all probability confused and throbbing and it maybe just plain uncomfortable when you first pick up the guitar. So you need to build some strength and elasticity through aerobics. No secrets here to playing guitar, just exercises and repetition. Practice makes perfect and all that stuff. When I was just starting I liked to sit in front of the Tube and just go over drills kind of unconsciously just to get my fingers strong.

Getting both hands to play nicely as one is also going to take some time so don’t get dispirited. At first your fingers tips will hurt, practice through that pain for as long as you can, don’t just take a breather right away . Before you know it the calluses on your finger will develop and you will be practicing for hours. The worst part of starting with the guitar is this just starting out phase. Please just stick with it and battle through it, the rewards will be immeasurable.

So let’s start with your strumming hand. This is your picking hand and your rhythm hand. You can use a pick or your fingers. Practice picking slowly and steady, alternating down and up. Start slow and play along as you tap your foot to keep in time. Down, up, down, up, down, etc. alternating slowly. Don’t rush this, build up speed as you get comfortable. Practice this on 1 string then move on to 2 strings, then 3 strings and so on as if you were practicing chords. When beginning or practicing in front of the TV you can mute the strings with your other hand to really pay attention to the rhythm.

Moving on to the fretting hand. Your fretting hand picks the notes that you want your strumming hand to play. This is the hand that also may start to hurt and the hand that doesn’t seem to know what it is doing when first starting out. No getting around this, just take it slow and steady with patience. It is key here to get all four fingers comfortable and in sync with each other. Don’t leave your pinkie out because it is harder to get going. When practicing guitar if you find something difficult then you need to practice it more.

So here is the nitty gritty exercise to get you smoking on that fret board. On fret one of your low E string press down strongly with your index finger. While still pressing use your middle finger on fret 2. While holding both down press your ring finger on fret 3. And of course the pinkie on fret four . As you are doing this you should be picking, always alternating, down and up, down and up. You then simply back up this process by lifting your pinkie first, then ring, etc So press 1, 2, 3, 4 and then reverse 4,3,2,1 while alternating your picking down and up.

This exercise should be practiced until you can’t stand it anymore, slow and accurate. Then as it gets simpler build up your speed. Practice this on all strings, all over the fretboard. This will unlock your fingers and really get them going. Start slow and build up. Guitar is my obsession and hopefully this can help you on your way. It honestly is an amazing instrument. If you’re just starting out on your guitar playing journey – these beginner guitar lessons will help you progress faster. In my 10 years of playing the guitar, I’ve learned quite a few things. It was not easy in the beginning, but it would have been easier if I had known the things that you’re about to learn.

Take Guitar Lessons from a Real Person First

Although you can learn a lot from online guitar lessons and books and dvds – they can’t take the place of a real, live person. This is especially true in the beginning. You really need an actual person to show you the correct way to hold your guitar; where to put your fingers; and how to strum different basic rhythms. When you make mistakes (you’ll make a ton in the beginning) your instructor can physically show you what you’re doing wrong. Only a real-live person can do this for you. And you really need this in the beginning. You don’t have to go to your instructor for a real long time if you don’t want to. You can get all the basics down after a month or two. Then you might choose to learn everything else from books, videos, or online lessons.

Regular Practice is Best

If at all possible, fit daily practice into your routine. It’s not a good idea to skip more than a couple of days between practice sessions. It doesn’t take an hour a day to get good. You can make real progress putting in a solid 10 or 15 minutes a day. If you only practice once or twice a week, you won’t progress nearly as fast. Even if those sessions are hour long sessions. Muscle memory and guitar reflexes need consistent, regular reinforcement.

It Will Be Tough in the Beginning

All new guitarists find it difficult in the beginning. You will have pain in all sorts of locations – especially your hands and fingers. And many people suffer with neck and back pain. But, don’t let it get you down. You will overcome this pain if you push through it. After a couple of weeks, your fingertips will develop calluses which will make it less painful to play. Your hands and wrist will become stronger and more flexible – and less painful too. Back and neck pain are the result of incorrect posture. This is why a live instructor is so important. They can help you to correct and work on any problems in your posture.

Buy a Quality Guitar

In an effort to save money, many beginning guitar students start out with a low-cost, poor quality guitar. This is never a wise decision. You might be saving money, but these cheap guitars are difficult to play – even for an experienced guitarist. The string action is usually way too high (strings sit high off the neck) – which makes it difficult to press them down and form notes and chords. These guitars have a hard time staying in tune. They often go out of tune after a couple minutes of playing. It’s no fun having to stop and retune your guitar every few minutes. And fret buzz is usually an issue. Fret buzz will make your playing really suffer. Good quality beginner guitars don’t cost a lot of money. You can get a nice, playable guitar in the $180 – $200 range. If you can’t afford a new one, get a used one. Go to your local guitar shop and try out as many guitars as you can to get a feel for them. If you don’t have much knowledge, take a knowledgeable friend with you or ask a sales clerk to demonstrate them for you. Guitar Lessons For Relative Beginners – How To Play Some Cool Little Chord Changes

I’ve got, as promised, another mini guitar lesson for you to try giving you a help in hand with your guitar playing.

This week’s tip is a nice little chord change that crops up in many songs and is really effective but it does assume you have some understanding of playing the guitar. If not don’t worry as my full course (due to be released shortly) covers every aspect from an absolute beginner through to monster guitar players.

Just keep this tip for future reference and once you get to the level to be able to play this phrase simply pull it out of your bag of tricks that you will be building up over the coming weeks.

Ok, let’s have a go:

Playing an ‘A major’ chord in the open position using your 1st,2nd and 3rd finger play one bar all downstrokes and on the beat.

OK, now lift off your 3rd finger to reveal the open B string, this chord is called the Asus2 chord and play one bar.

Next using your 4th finger hold down the B string at the 3rd fret (1st and 2nd finger remain unchanged at the second fret throughout this piece), play one bar (Chord is called Asus4) and finish off by playing one bar of A Major to complete this four bar sequence.

Now before I sign off I would like to show you a cool little trick you can use to create cool sounding chords easily by using the open strings within the chords.

Let’s give it a go… Play an A major (A) chord but with a difference… The fingerings are: 4th string 7th fret with the 3rd finger… 3rd string 6th fret 2nd finger… and 2nd string, 5th fret 1st finger. The 1st string is played open. This chord is an A Major (A). Ok, now strum one bar….

Now move the whole chord shape down the neck two frets keeping the 1st string open and play one bar (G6)…

Now play a Dsus2 chord ..Fingering: 4th string open -3rd string 2nd fret first finger – 2nd string 3rd fret 3rd finger and again 1st string open, play one bar.

To finish off we now play an A Major chord in the open position… 5th string open… 4th,3rd and 2nd string are played at the second fret with fingers 1,2,3 and the 1st string is …you guessed it open.

Now if you want a great chord progression that sounds great on its own, play one or two bars of each chord numerous times. It’s a great progression to solo over and superb for writing your own songs.

Guitar Lessons – How To Master Harmonics

This week let’s have a look at a series of three on harmonics.

Harmonics on the guitar are a natural phenomenon. They occur over the 5th, 7th and 12th fret.

To play a harmonic all you have to do is gently touch the string over the fret – we’ll use the 12th fret for this example – you DO NOT fret the string just touch it directly over the fret and pluck the string.

You should hear the harmonic note once you pluck the string. If a dull muted sound rings out then you need to move your finger towards the fret while plucking the string and once you hear the clear ringing harmonic sound you have found the spot.

Try this over all the strings at the 12th, 7th and 5th frets.

You really do need this killer technique and is a ‘must know’ for any guitarist and should be part of their bag of tricks.

Give it a whirl.

Now that you have had chance to practice harmonics I would like to show you how to tune your guitar using this technique.

Using harmonics is the most accurate way to manually tune up your guitar. Let’s have a look…

The harmonic over the 5th fret on the 6th string is the same pitch as the harmonic over the 7th fret on the 5th string.

The two harmonics when played together will produce wavering sound if the strings aren’t in tune with each other. If for example you tune the 5th staring and this wavering sound speeds up then this means the string is going further out of tune. If the sound slows down then this means it’s coming into tune. Keep tuning until the wavering has stopped, when stopped it means the two strings are in tune with each other. If you tune too far then the wavering sound will speed up again!

Repeat this method on strings 5 & 4 and 4 & 3.

When tuning the 2nd string we have to be a little innovative here as this string is tuned 4 frets higher than the 3rd whereas the others are tuned 5 frets higher so this technique has to be adapted. Now play the harmonic on the 3rd string at the 12th fret (this note is G) then FRET the 8th fret on the 2nd string (the note is again G of course!) use your strumming hand to turn the tuning peg and tune the string!

Back to normal now, tune the 1st string 7th fret harmonic to the 2nd string 5th fret harmonic.

When using this technique to tune your guitar it is best to have your distortion turned on as it really makes the wavering sound ring out.

As stated earlier this is a great way to tune your guitar and much more accurate than the normal and tuning method.

Now we’ll move onto the last in this series of three on harmonics. The third is a look at pinched harmonics that’s also known at artificial or false harmonics.

To produce this type of harmonic we have to touch the string ever so slightly with the side of the thumb straight after plucking it. To get the best effect turn your distortion/overdrive on and will sound like a screech. Here is how we do it: Move your picking hand up and down the string whilst picking constantly to find where the different harmonic notes are found.

Billy Gibbons is an absolute master of this technique and if you want to hear what it should sound like there is no better man to listen too.

Here is an old line from one of the famous blues songs and it says, “the blues had a baby…and they called it rock n’ roll.”

Mastering Lead Guitar By Using Blues Guitar Scales

Playing The best blues guitar scales include the Am Pentatonic scales, natural A minor scales, E minor, G shuffle licks and many others. These scales can help you not only to master the blues scales but also help you to play lead and make your own blues backing tracks.

There are different types of blues scales that can be used for lead guitar playing. You can also use them to make some blues backing tracks so that you can play along with the tracks and learn faster. Blues backing tracks can help you to play solo or lead even when there is no second guitarist present and the best thing is that you can even purchase some of the best blues backing tracks from the Internet from companies such as 50Blues. Let’s take a look at some of the most common blues scales used for lead guitar playing and for creating blues backing tracks.

Using Blues Scales

You can start with a natural A-minor scale also known as the A minor scale. Here’s how it looks:

You can start practicing the natural A-minor scale till the time you are extremely comfortable using it. You can use all the notes that are there in this blues scale for playing the lead guitar with a blues backing track. There are many blues players who use the A-minor pentatonic or the Am pentatonic scale in a mix with the natural A-minor scale.

Once in a while you should try and mix two scales together to bring out a different blues sound. To play the natural A-minor scale, you can tune it to play the Dm7 chord. The Dm7 comprises of D-F-A-C notes. The only chord that is not in the A-minor pentatonic scale is F because A-minor pentatonic comprises of A-C-D-E-G notes.

On the other hand, the natural A-minor scale comprises of A-B-C-D-E-F-G notes. So what you should ideally do is emphasize on the F taken from natural A- minor scale while playing the Dm7 chord. This will bring out a definitive blues scale and sound that can be played as lead with blues backing track.

Some of the best blues scales are just minor pentatonic scales with some added notes. This added note is commonly referred to as the blues note and helps in bringing out the specific blues sound. You can play a basic minor pentatonic scale or the basic blues scale, which will consist of 6 different notes.

When you are playing the lead or creating a blues backing track for a solo then you will need to play all the points for all the 6 notes that are within one position. For example: If you use a C blues scale then you will find that it consists of C E F G G and B notes. Here are the notes that are found in the basic C blues scale:

|–C–|—–|—–|-E–| -1st string |–G–|—–|—–|-B–| |–E-|—–|–F–|-G–| |–B-|—–|–C–|—–| |–F–|-G–|–G–|—–| |–C–|—–|—–|-E–| -6th string | 8th fret

The idea is that there are 6 different notes brought up above and once you’ve reached your 6th note, you will need to start back from the C note and go over the process over and over again to master playing lead guitar for the blues.
