Guitar Lessons For Relative Beginners ...

It’s Mike again from KillerGuitarTips.com

I’ve got, as promised, another mini guitar lesson for you to try giving you a help in hand with your guitar playing.

This week’s tip is a nice little chord change that crops up in many songs and is really effective but it does assume you have some understanding of playing the guitar. If not don’t worry as my full course (due to be released shortly) covers every aspect from an absolute beginner through to monster guitar players.

Just keep this tip for future reference and once you get to the level to be able to play this phrase simply pull it out of your bag of tricks that you will be building up over the coming weeks.

Ok, let’s have a go:

Playing an ‘A major’ chord in the open position using your 1st,2nd and 3rd finger play one bar all downstrokes and on the beat.

OK, now lift off your 3rd finger to reveal the open B string, this chord is called the Asus2 chord and play one bar.

Next using your 4th finger hold down the B string at the 3rd fret (1st and 2nd finger remain unchanged at the second fret throughout this piece), play one bar (Chord is called Asus4) and finish off by playing one bar of A Major to complete this four bar sequence.

Now before I sign off I would like to show you a cool little trick you can use to create cool sounding chords easily by using the open strings within the chords.

Let’s give it a go… Play an A major (A) chord but with a difference… The fingerings are: 4th string 7th fret with the 3rd finger… 3rd string 6th fret 2nd finger… and 2nd string, 5th fret 1st finger. The 1st string is played open. This chord is an A Major (A). Ok, now strum one bar….

Now move the whole chord shape down the neck two frets keeping the 1st string open and play one bar (G6)…

Now play a Dsus2 chord ..Fingering: 4th string open -3rd string 2nd fret first finger – 2nd string 3rd fret 3rd finger and again 1st string open, play one bar.

To finish off we now play an A Major chord in the open position… 5th string open… 4th,3rd and 2nd string are played at the second fret with fingers 1,2,3 and the 1st string is …you guessed it open.

Now if you want a great chord progression that sounds great on its own, play one or two bars of each chord numerous times. It’s a great progression to solo over and superb for writing your own songs.

Until next time, keep practicing!

Warmest regards Mike

Learn To Play And Master The Guitar

It is no secret that the guitar is one of the most adored pieces of musical instruments of all times. The sound of a guitar could easily melt your heart and make you lose your soul. That may be the reason why girls go crazy over guitar music and why guys try so hard to learn playing it. Our history has shown us great guitarists whom have been venerated just for possessing great guitar skills. So all in all, guitar is a source of inspiration and carries an impeccable bond with human life.

It is a commonly held belief that playing guitar is difficult and I wouldnt dismiss the notion whole heartedly. But if youve got the drive, dedication and a goal in mind, you will most certainly become a guitarist in no time. It is not always necessary to have a private tutor. Simply seek advice, tips and tricks from fellow senior guitar players and you will be just fine!

All you have to do is learn your basic chord compositions and fingering on your own and then find chords and sequences of your favorite song and try to play along. Dont worry this may sound complicated but its not. These fingering patterns and chords compositions are all available on the internet free of charge thanks to some very generous music lovers. At the same time it is better to learn the chords and the basic fingering from that friend of yours or your uncle that can play the guitar really well. Then you can always be sure on what you do.

If you are already playing another instrument such as piano, violin or cello ” you will find solace and comfort in a guitar as the rhythms and patterns will be familiarized for you. So try to use your prior knowledge of music while you try to learn playing guitar.

Becoming thorough with both minor and major chords is a must when you learn to play a guitar. If you resort to easy ways, you will most probably come out disappointed, not being able to play a single piece. So put some effort and learn all chords that there is. Once you do this and with proper practice, you will be set as free as a bird to thrive on chords and create music.

If youve got a keen ear, try playing by it. The moment you succeed, you can call yourself a rhythm guitarist. This is what most guitarists do, when they play pop songs that they like. However, be careful not to miss crucial details while you stroll as the rhythm and strumming patterns will need to be matched 100%, if you are to recreate the same piece on guitar.

Lead guitarists are different and a further complex step away. So if you fancy playing lead, you should certainly find a good tutor who knows how to deliver the best. You may be tempted to learn lead over the internet, but this is a huge no-no as you will regret your decision later. Many finer points of playing the lead guitar are not revealed in online tutorials so it is best that you get in to detail with a tutor while learning how to hammer down fingers and how to alternate fingering patterns, from an expert.

So are you still trying to woo that girl on to your side, or looking to rock your high school prom with your killer riffs? Its never too late to live the dream. Start working on it now itself. But remember, that practice makes you perfect.

One website that I found to be helpful in discovering the trustworthiness of a guitar program, was http://www.learn-and-master-guitar.com. If you have been searching for a way to teach yourself the guitar, there is no better time than now. You can pick up an online program from anywhere these days and get started with your lessons. It sure beats the old days of finding a personal tutor.

Guitar Lessons – How To Master ...

Here’s another FREE guitar lesson from Mike at KillerGuitarTips.com

This week let’s have a look at a series of three on harmonics.

Harmonics on the guitar are a natural phenomenon. They occur over the 5th, 7th and 12th fret.

To play a harmonic all you have to do is gently touch the string over the fret – we’ll use the 12th fret for this example – you DO NOT fret the string just touch it directly over the fret and pluck the string.

You should hear the harmonic note once you pluck the string. If a dull muted sound rings out then you need to move your finger towards the fret while plucking the string and once you hear the clear ringing harmonic sound you have found the spot.

Try this over all the strings at the 12th, 7th and 5th frets.

You really do need this killer technique and is a ‘must know’ for any guitarist and should be part of their bag of tricks.

If you would like to look at a good example of harmonics, take a look at the middle section of U2’s Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Give it a whirl.

Now that you have had chance to practice harmonics I would like to show you how to tune your guitar using this technique.

Using harmonics is the most accurate way to manually tune up your guitar. Let’s have a look…

The harmonic over the 5th fret on the 6th string is the same pitch as the harmonic over the 7th fret on the 5th string.

The two harmonics when played together will produce wavering sound if the strings aren’t in tune with each other. If for example you tune the 5th staring and this wavering sound speeds up then this means the string is going further out of tune. If the sound slows down then this means it’s coming into tune. Keep tuning until the wavering has stopped, when stopped it means the two strings are in tune with each other. If you tune too far then the wavering sound will speed up again!

Repeat this method on strings 5 & 4 and 4 & 3.

When tuning the 2nd string we have to be a little innovative here as this string is tuned 4 frets higher than the 3rd whereas the others are tuned 5 frets higher so this technique has to be adapted. Now play the harmonic on the 3rd string at the 12th fret (this note is G) then FRET the 8th fret on the 2nd string (the note is again G of course!) use your strumming hand to turn the tuning peg and tune the string!

Back to normal now, tune the 1st string 7th fret harmonic to the 2nd string 5th fret harmonic.

When using this technique to tune your guitar it is best to have your distortion turned on as it really makes the wavering sound ring out.

As stated earlier this is a great way to tune your guitar and much more accurate than the normal and tuning method.

Now we’ll move onto the last in this series of three on harmonics. The third is a look at pinched harmonics that’s also known at artificial or false harmonics.

To produce this type of harmonic we have to touch the string ever so slightly with the side of the thumb straight after plucking it. To get the best effect turn your distortion/overdrive on and will sound like a screech. Here is how we do it: Move your picking hand up and down the string whilst picking constantly to find where the different harmonic notes are found.

Billy Gibbons is an absolute master of this technique and if you want to hear what it should sound like there is no better man to listen too.

Above all – remember, practice equals progress!

Just What Are Acoustic Guitar Tabs

In order for you to play the acoustic guitar properly, you need to understand a little bit more about guitar music. Firstly, the musical notations used for when playing the guitar or any other stringed instrument are different from those used for other musical instruments. Where as other musicians use staffs, notes, note values, ledger lines and key and time signatures in order to play music. A guitar player will only use musical notations referred to as tabs. The main advantage to be had from using acoustic guitar tabs is that you can learn to play this instrument without actually having to learn to read music as well.

All of acoustic guitar tabs are a form of musical notation, which is known as tablature. However, when you look at an acoustic guitar tab, you will actually be looking at a diagram showing the strings on the guitar. The lines on the diagram represent the strings, with the first string being at the top and the sixth string being at the bottom. On the lines, you will also see numbers that represent which fret you are actually meant to play. When a Zero (0) appears on the lines this indicates an open string, whilst an X represents a muffled string.

If you are not familiar with what a fret is, this is the area between two metal bars on the fingerboard (neck) of the guitar. There are usually between twenty-one and twenty-four frets on each guitar. When you look at a tabs diagram you will see dots and these indicate the fret position in which your fingers should be placed in order to play a particular note. They also help you to know exactly where you are as you play a particular song.

When you look at an acoustic guitar tab and the numbers are placed one after the other, on the same line it is these numbers, which show you that fret to use on a particular string, and then you pluck only that string. In addition, because the numbers are noted one after the other this further tells you that you play one note at a time.

But if you find yourself in a situation when reading the diagram that you need to place each finger on to a separate string and on the same fret this is indicating that you then need to play these notes at the same time. The easiest and most effective way of doing this is by strumming on the strings rather than plucking them all at the same time.

Along with the tab positions, we have mentioned above there are other ones which you will need to learn. This includes Hammer-ons, Pull-offs, Slides and Bends and these are denoted by various letters and symbols. The Hammer-ons are denoted by the letter “h”, Pull-offs are denoted by the letter “p”, whilst bends are denoted by the letter “b”. As for Slides, these are denoted by a slash “/”. The type of tab you are likely to see on the diagram in front of when learning tabs where Hammer-ons are required are “7h9″.

Once you are able to read acoustic guitar tabs you then need to start looking for some that you can practice. Ideally go online and search for some easy acoustic guitar tabs and then pick a song (basic as possible) that not only do you know well and then start to play it. But be warned you will find it will take some time before you are able to read and play these tabs as they take some getting use to. But you will be surprised just how quickly you are able to pick them and read others ones as well.

Also being able to hear the song that you have been learning the acoustic guitar tabs for makes it much easier to learn as well. So even if you do think that you remember how the song goes when listening to it but actually being able to read the tabs as well will help you to learn and understand the rhythm and detail of the song as well.

By using acoustic guitar tabs in order to learn how to play the guitar will be much more fun and before too long you will be able to play several different songs quite easily. These you can the play for your own pleasure or for the pleasure of friends and family.

Above we have provided information on just what acoustic guitar tabs are, but if you would like to learn more about acoustic guitars including learn how to play then click on the link here Acoustic Guitar Information.

Learn To Play The Guitar With Ease

Fantastic, you are on your way to becoming a guitar player! This is an enjoyable pastime, but it has its bumps and curves too. You are going to be figuring out something new, so you want to lock down the fundamental ideas before you start complicating everything. Here you are going to be introduced to some basic guitar playing concepts; after you are done you will have to use your own initiative to continue your journey.

Should you not already possess a guitar, you want to invest in one so you can study how it should be played. Your best option for finding the right guitar is to find a music shop ” definitely not a chain store ” and ask a professional working there for advice. When you are holding the instrument, it has to feel right for you. As to price, you want one in the high part of your budget bracket, but not necessarily the most expensive one in store.

If you are holding your guitar now you want to take a look at the different parts of it and their functions. The head of the guitar is the part with many pegs sticking out of it. The pegs are called tuning pegs and are used to tighten or loosen the guitar strings. The neck of the guitar has strings running across it and position markers along it show where you are to press down on the strings to change sounds.

The neck is the narrow board between the body and the head (also called the neck) strings pressed at different places (also position markers) give different sounds to the playing of that string. The body of the guitar comes in various sizes and shapes. This part holds the pickups/sound-hole (sound controls) and the strings on the bridge of it, it is made from a variety of materials and is primarily responsible for the overall cost of the guitar.

Now you have a good start on becoming familiar with the parts and pieces of your guitar, so you need to figure out how to read guitar music. The unofficial web name for guitar music you will find online is called tablature.

There will be six lines in close connection and they represent each of the six strings from top (thinnest string) to bottom (thickest string) of your guitar strings. You will generally see 4 beats for each tab section with a number representing the number and position of frets being held. You need to review a few pieces to get a handle on the structure for this type of music sheet.

Strumming is definitely one of the most commonly seen rhythms used with the guitar. Since you know what your guitar parts are and have started understanding music sheets its time to start strumming. A metronome will help you figure out the rhythm easiest, so set one and count out sets of four beats. Take your guitar, open with a C chord then follow your music sheet with a beginner rhythm. Just make sure you are keeping up with the 1,2,3,4 beat.

Now you are equipped with the information needed for basic guitar playing. You want to review the wealth of information out there on the web, and review some music sheets. Remember, you want to play with your heart so your audience feels it, and you enjoy it.

Free Guitar Lessons For Beginners ...

Your friend Mike here from KillerGuitarTips.com with another Free Guitar Lesson

This week Id like to answer some questions I get asked quite frequently.

Sometimes I’m asked questions like “Do I have good guitar playing fingers?” Or “What is the best guitar for me to learn on” and very often “How should I practice?”

In over 2 decades of teaching guitar I can say without question I have probably seen every shape and size of hands and fingers there can possibly be. From short and stumpy through to long and thin. I have not yet found anything that has prevented a student from successfully learning guitar. What matters is practice, with practice comes dexterity in anybody dedicated to learning to play the guitar. So please dismiss the fact that your fingers make a difference, it’s not your fingers it’s all about practice and dexterity. Just keep practicing and adjusting your hand position when you hear a muted (duff) note. Slowly and surely you will build up the skills and technique in order to play all your favourite tunes both easily and smoothly.

What is the best guitar to learn on?

This question is about money and choice! If your favourite music id rock music then you may wish to consider an electric guitar to learn and practice on. If your bag is the sound of an acoustic guitar then this is exactly the type of guitar you should learn on. There are no rules. The way we learn guitar is the same no matter what type as a beginner. Sure, there are different styles but that comes later in your learning progression. For now play what you like to listen to because there is one thing for sure… If you don’t enjoy what you are doing you will seriously hinder your progress.

Now of course the better guitar you can afford the easier it will be to play and consequently easier to learn. If you can afford a better quality guitar then go for it but do not despair if your pocket cannot stretch too far, there are plenty of decent quality budget guitars on the market that are definitely good enough to learn on.

An electric guitar will be easier on the hands than an acoustic so if you learn on an acoustic the transfer to an electric is a delight, vice versa and you will have to put in extra effort to hold down even the simplest of chords. Which ever your choice you will need to practice regularly to obtain good results.

Practicing.

In my own personal practice sessions I have found it better to practice for short regular periods rather than trying to do it all at once in one long session. Try to practice half an hour each day rather than one long period. You also need to bear in mind to practice the old stuff as well as new pieces in order to keep your hand in and build on what you have learned. It is also best to try to divide your practice time into sections for excercises, scales and chord work, not forgetting and not neglecting some time to play your favourite songs and pieces. try to restrain yourself from messing around with chords and ditties and construct a regular practice session and work out then stick with it!

Just another note to expand on the importance of practicing I cannot stress this enough

Learning to play the guitar is a combination of knowledge (What to play) and physical motor skills (being able to accurately and quickly move your fingers). The two together create great killer guitarists.

To develop motor skills repetition is essential. Too many budding guitarists give up too soon because if they cannot play a piece they blame themselves as not being good enough when their friends stick at it and eventually succeed. The main difference between the likes of you and guitarists like Eric Clapton is that he stuck at it and you can do exactly the same.

It takes time to develop the necessary skills to play a guitar well. But heres a killer tip: You should learn in your head before you start to practice, the passage, chord sequence or riff you desire and then practice it slowly so there is no possibility of making a mistake and increase your pace as you improve.

It is better to practice for short periods everyday rather than trying to cram it all in when you can.

Remember ‘repetition is the mother of skill’ the more you can practice the better you will become. This is quite obvious but you must practice the correct technique.

There are no short cuts, no free rides, you will get out of it what you put in. It is vitally important to practice good technique and motor skills shown to you by someone who knows what they are doing, not your friend around the corner as they will probably only teach you bad habits which are very hard to get rid of.

How To Get Started Playing

If you love performing, you will throughly enjoy learning to play the guitar. There’s nothing better than showing off to your friends and family by playing their favorite guitar songs. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to learn guitar for beginners especially if you don’t know where to start. It takes time to figure out how to play the guitar, and if you get frustrated easily, you may quit before you are able to play the simplest song.

Learning the guitar requires you to master the fundamentals. First off, your guitar needs to be in tune, otherwise anything you play will sound terrible. If you don’t tune your guitar on a regular basis, your strings will become stretched and sound distorted. E-A-D-G-B-E is the standard guitar tuning. While there are other tuning you can use, it is best to start with this one first.

Once you have tuned your guitar, you can start playing some notes with it. To play a note, take one of the strings, and press down on it on one of the frets with one finger, and pluck at the string with your other hand. Play around and do the same thing with different frets on the same string. Congratulations, you are playing the guitar.

Now that you are able to play a few notes, the next step is to figure out how to play some basic chords. Using a guitar chord chart, try to find a few chords that you can play. It will take some time to train your fingers to play chords properly, but don’t get frustrated. You will get the hang of them, and eventually you should be able to go back and forth between a few alternate chords at once.

Are You Ready to Play Guitar for the ...

Well, maybe you’ve dabbled with it here and there, but haven’t actually played a cool tune. You know, “Hot-Cross-Buns” or something similar, but not any major music hits. It doesn’t matter what kind of music you enjoy, the guitar is great for any category.

If you want to start a career in the guitar world or maybe as a hobby, it takes patience, dedication, and commitment. Plus, you’ll also have to account for the physical effects as well.

Have you ever held a hammer or something else for too long only to find out it develops calluses? Well, guitar players get them from strumming the strings. Just like someone who types, a guitar player can have his or her hands cramp up because they’re not used to the strenuous activity. Heck, even your shoulders will get sore along the way.

We all have to start at the beginning, and so do you. No one has ever been able to just pick up a guitar and play a Beatles, Rolling Stones, Fall Out Boyz, or any other group’s song without learning the ins and outs.

When you first learn how to play the guitar, it’s important to understand the tuning process. If you can’t figure this out, then your going to hear sounds that are as bad as Mike Ditka’s singing “Take Me Out to The Ball Game” at Wrigley Field (it was horrendous). You have the lower E string, the A string, the D string, the G string, and the B string. These are arranged from the bottom of the guitar to the top. Then of course you have the high E string, which should be tuned last.

You can pay the music store to tune your guitar for you. However, it really is a skill that you should learn on your own. Otherwise, you’ll be spending a lot of money on having your guitar tuned. You can ask someone at a music store to teach you how to tune a guitar. They may do it for free, or they may charge a small fee. It is worthwhile to learn because you’ll also ensure that any time you’re ready to play, your guitar will sound its best.

Once your guitar is properly tuned, you should now learn how to read guitar tabs. These tutorials can be found in the internet. Then, you must properly place your fingers on each string. This can help you lessen the pain that you will encounter. After that, try to strum the guitar using your other hand. Lastly, practice playing songs that have the least complicated chords to play. Some simple chords are C, G, and A.

That’s it! You now know how to play the guitar. Always remember that practice makes perfect. The more you practice, the sooner you will master playing the guitar.

Best Guitar For Beginners|Discovering ...

Choosing the best guitar for a beginner can be difficult but the most important things to look at are price, reliability and versatility. By these standards, the Squier Stratocaster is easily the best guitar for beginners.

Manufactured by Fender, the Squier Stratocaster is one of the best value beginner guitars and it can be easily found in a local music store or online for $200. No beginner needs a more costly instrument and you can always pickup a better guitar once you have developed your guitar playing skills.

One of the main selling points of the Squier is how durable it is. The Fender brand means that as long as you take care of the instrument it should last for awhile with relatively few problems. For instance, I have heard that the strap buttons can come loose after a couple of months but this is easily fixed and the fact that this is the biggest problem the guitar faces with wear is a testament to its dependability.

Of course, cost and reliability don’t mean much if the guitar isn’t versatile enough. New guitar players should have a solid instrument on which to practice everything from the blues to rock to heavy metal. The Squier Strat gives you all of these options and although it is unable to match the thrills of more expensive instruments, it is built to give the beginner a solid platform for learning to play the guitar.

If you go shopping for this guitar, don’t confuse the Squier Stratocaster with the Squier Affinity Strat or the Fender Stratocaster. The Affinity is a much cheaper guitar and it shows whereas the Fender Stratocaster is costs a bit more. The Squier Stratocaster sits right in the middle and is the best buy for the a new guitarist.

In my opinion, the Squier Stratocaster is the best guitar for beginners. Its price, durability and versatility make it the ideal choice for beginning guitar learners. Go to your local music store and try to pick one up. Pair it up with a good guitar course and you will definitely learn a lot with it.

Want to Play Guitar Songs? Read This

Before you should even attempt to play guitar songs, ensure your guitar is properly tuned. If your guitar isn’t properly tuned before you play, the song you are trying to play will not sound right at all. Another skill that you will have to know how to do before you can play guitar songs is to know how to read guitar tabs.

Once you have tuned in your guitar and know how to read guitar tabs, you will need to train your ear when listening to a song in order to be able to play guitar songs. Listen to simple songs to begin with, preferably those songs consisting of three simple chords.

Whilst listening to the song, pay particular attention to the rhythm and the timing of the chords and strums you hear being played on the guitar. When you have listened to a song a few times, have a go at following along with the song by reading the guitar tab at the same time as the song is being played. Do this a few times and as you do, make a mental note of the rhythm and timing you hear.

After you have listened to the song a few times and followed along on the guitar tab, you should then pick up your own guitar. As the song is playing strum along with the song. Of course, you don’t want to play your guitar too loudly; you want to be able to still hear the song you are trying to mimic.

As you begin to pick up the timing and strumming style, you can start to play the song on your own without the assistance of the music. Don’t worry if you forget the song because you can easily listen to it again if you need to. The songs you practice on your guitar should be played over and over again, one at a time, until you are able to sing along with the song as you play. It will help you if you master one song before moving on to the next.

It’s a great idea to record yourself playing if you can. This affords you the luxury of being able to watch the playback of your performance and correct any mistakes you are making in your technique.

Discovering how to play guitar songs is not as difficult as you may first think. All you need is passion and patience. If it takes a while and you make many errors, don’t worry about it too much as this will only lead to you making more mistakes. If you just can’t seem to get it right and become frustrated put down the guitar for a while and go off and do something else. But remember to pick up your guitar later on and get back to practicing how to play guitar songs until you get it just right.

Acoustic Guitar Tabs – Vital To ...

When you play acoustic guitar, you have the advantage of a totally different, and much easier, kind of music notation. No more notes and staffs and time signatures. This is simpler and more intuitive. Its acoustic guitar tabs, which are notations based on the positions of the instruments strings. The greatest advantage is not having to learn to read music the traditional way. A number of string instruments utilize tabs.

The form of musical notation specific to the guitar is acoustic guitar tabs, or tablature. Each chord is notated with one tab, a small chart of the guitar strings themselves. The string at the top of the diagram is the one furthest from your body as you hold the guitar. Each string will show a number, which is the fret you should hold to create that chord. If you see a zero, that means an open string. An X means that string should be muffled.

The area between the two metal bars on the neck or fingerboard of a guitar is called a fret, if you are not familiar with this. On an acoustic guitar, there are usually 21 to 24 frets. The dots on the frets are visual guides for your convenience when playing.

While looking at acoustic guitar tabs, first you should note if the numbers are listed one after another on each of the lines. If they are arranged in this manner, the numbers are indicating to you which fret to use on that string, and you pluck that one string alone. On the other hand, if you notice that the numbers are stacked one on top of the other (in a vertical manner) on the individual line, the acoustic guitar tab is instructing you to play these notes simultaneously, strumming all six strings at the same time.

When you’re reading on up acoustic guitar tabs, a few other things are going to come up, like hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends and slides. The letter h indicates a hammer-on. For instance, you might see something like 7h9 on one of the lines. Pull-offs are indicated by a p, bends by the letter b, and slides by the notation “/ (that’s a slash mark).

When you’re able to read acoustic guitar tabs, look for simple guitar tabs online. Find a melody that you recognize, and experiment with it. Though it might take a while for you to feel fully comfortable reading and playing acoustic guitar tabs, you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment when everything falls into place.

Listening to a song while you are trying to learn it makes it simpler to learn. Details and rhythms that you think you remember will pop out and help you. Learning the guitar using acoustic guitar tabs makes it quite a bit more fun. It won’t take long to learn several songs, and you will be able to play them for your friends at parties, or while you’re alone so you can enjoy them in private.

Tune Acoustic Guitar – Simple Tips ...

You should be sure to do your acoustic guitar tuning each time you sit down to play, whether you are practicing or performing. Its pretty unpleasant to try to make beautiful music on an untuned guitar. Lots of guitar students think their inexperience is ruining the sound, not understanding the importance of doing their tuning regularly. You will be much more successful in your music making if you set aside that small amount of time it takes to tune your instrument properly.

For acoustic guitar tuning with an electronic tuner, sit down and place the tuner on either a stool or table next to your seat. Then pluck the first string. The tuner’s microphone can sense which string is being tuned. You will know how close you are to the right pitch by the indicator on the tuner. It also indicates if you are sharp or flat. Utilize the tuning key to adjust the guitar string until it indicates that you are in tune.

Always remember to tune up. This means going from loose to tight until the string is in tune. If you go too tightly and then loosen the string slightly to put it in tune, this is referred to as tuning down. It is always best to loosen the string and then re-tighten it to put it into tune. Tuning up keeps the string in tune in a much better fashion and the results are more precise.

A reference pitch source is needed whether or not you want to use an electric tuner when learning how to tune your guitar. Some options as to other things you can use are a tuning fork, another in tune guitar, a piano, or an MP3 that you know is in tune. Your results will always be accurate if you use an electric tuner when acoustic guitar tuning. If you’d like to try it the old fashioned way, an electric tuner will be helpful if you’d like to check your results.

Begin acoustic guitar tuning with the sixth string (low E), which should be tuned to match the reference pitch. After you’ve done that, the other strings must be tuned to that note. Simply work on them one by one. There’s a scientific explanation for this procedure, but you don’t have to learn it anymore than you have to learn to build an engine in order to drive an automobile.

Here’s how to do your acoustic guitar tuning:

(1) Once the low E string (sixth string) is in tune, play it on the fifth fret, and then pluck the open fifth string. Adjust the the tone of the fifth string as necessary until the two notes match. (2) Move up to the fifth string. Playing it on the fifth fret, tune the open forth string. (3) Similarly, adjust the tone of the third string while playing the fifth fret of the fourth string. (4) For the next note, play the third string on the fourth fret (not the fifth) and tune the second string. (5) Tune the open high E string, comparing it to the tone of the second string, fifth fret.

Before you try acoustic guitar tuning for the first time, have an experienced player show you the ropes. The best place to learn is probably the music shop where you bought your acoustic guitar. After a few tries, you’ll get the hang of it. You have to put time and effort into mastering the skill of acoustic guitar tuning. Its a whole lot easier for someone just starting out to use an electronic tuner instead. Since they only cost about $20, they are well worth their price. Whats more, if you choose one that was manufactured especially for use with guitars, it can actually let you know which string you’re playing too.
