Stadivari’s Violin Cremona, 1699, Castelbarco

A Violin Designed From Endless Experimentation

This violin was, with the “Castelbarco” cello of 1697, once a part of the quartet of Stradivaris owned by Count Cesare Castelbarco of Milan. After the count died, it was sold in London to Jean Baptiste Vuillaume. The violin later was sold to several other owners until it was purchased in about 1875 by John Mountford, who also owned the “Kreisler” Guarneri. Mountford owned this violin until his death, at which time it passed to the Hills of London and then to a Mrs. Renton of Guildford, Surrey. Nathan Posner bought this violin from Mrs. Renton and brought it to the United States. He in turn sold it to Mrs. Gertrude Clarke Whittall.

Stradivari’s works from 1697-99 are especially interesting in that they reflect his relentless experimentation-notably a transition from the long form of the mid-decade to the elegant proportions of his post-1700 works. The “Castelbarco” is among the last of these long-form instruments–slightly longer in body length but also narrower across the bouts. The length of the back of this violin is 355.5 mm while the 1704 “Betts” measures 353.0 mm.

Castelbarco’s Unusual Design

Notable in the arching is the fullness in the C-bout, which gives the instrument more of a barrel shape than evidenced in later instruments. The pegbox, a design change, shows Stradivari’s practical side-enlarging Amati’s typical narrow dimension of the inside of the pegbox at the A-peg to 10.6 mm. The scroll was further widened on the “Betts” to 11.4 mm in an effort to give a musician greater ease in putting on an A-string.

Many of the Stradivari violins sold by the Hills have an inscription inside noting an owner. In the “Castelbarco” violin, it is inscribed in the top in the lower bout on the treble side: “The ‘Castelbarco’ Stradivari / for many years in possession / of John Mountford Esq. / A. Distortion

Distortion is the daddy of effects. It is, in fact, the sound synonymous with that of an electric guitar. The type and level of this effect required depends upon the genre it is being applied to. Metal needs a crunchy sound whilst blues requires a warmer sound. With country, it its use is limited as they’re just using enough to create a clean sound.

Delay

This is a reverb-style effect and like distort, is highly used. Think of the boomy sound that a large room creates and the more bright and distinct sound a small room makes. You’ll hear the sound when it first made itself known and then the sound that reflects off the walls. The sound gives an indication as to the size of room that you’re in. Although the sound isn’t quite as distinct, it sounds very much like reverb.

Chorus

The function of this effect is to split the sound as well as adding a delay, albeit a slight one, to one of the signals. When two guitarists are performing simultaneously, there will uniformly be one slightly out of synch with the other. The chorus recreates that sound so effectively you’re hearing the sound of a chorus. It gives the effect of two guitarist’s performing resulting in a thicker sound.

The sound that you hear when you hear the tones of an electric guitar will at some point make use of at least one of these effects. Rock and heavy metal are synonymous with this sound. These effects can be used to create a sound all of their own and inspire the next generation of guitarists as has happened ever since these effects came into being.

To play something on a piano, you must know which key to hit and when. You can remember this for a few simple songs, but sooner or later you’ll need a more practical solution. What you need are instructions on a piece of paper. And that is what piano tabs are – a simple way to notate music.

Compared to standard sheet music, tabs are easier to learn and understand. This is the reason why they’re so popular, especially on the internet. Because they are simple, they are great for beginners, but you should be aware that their simplicity also brings limitations.

Fine, let’s begin. We’ll start with something easy, something that everybody knows. How about Mary Had a Little Lamb? Okay, here is a piano tab for Mary Had a Little Lamb: 4|e–dc-d-|e-e-e—|d-d-d—|e-g-g—|. As you can see there are no notes. Piano tabs are made only of letters, numbers, and some symbols. No notes here. Let’s go decipher this, it’s really not that difficult.

Most tabs that you will come across will probably consist of several lines. Our simple example only has one. Every line starts with a number – in our case 4. What does the number mean? It indicates an octave in which the notes on the line are in. The notes in our example are in the fourth octave.

What about the letters? Yes, the letters are the meat of all this. They correspond to the notes that you have to play. Lowercase letters are natural notes (white keys on a piano), uppercase letters are sharps or flats (black keys on a piano).

There are also some symbols in our example, what are those? The vertical lines are there to separate measures. The dashes indicate timing. And that’s about it.

There is clearly more to piano tabs than our simple example has shown us, but these are the basics. You should remember, however, that tabs will never be a substitute for a standard musical notation.

The number one cause for people to get discouraged is lack of guidance. At the beginner stage, guidance is extremely important. You must know where you are at and when to move on.

This could be a problem, if you don’t have somebody to guide you. Many beginners get ahead of themselves and then they quickly get discouraged and frustrated. They want to learn advanced techniques too soon and then they realize that it’s not working. Before you know it, the guitar is in the corner collecting dust.

Guitar is most definitely a step by step process. Remember this. And this is the reasons why you need some sort of lessons. Lessons that will guide you through the whole course in a step by step fashion.

At an early stage, fundamentals are the most important thing to work on. Whatever you do, don’t skip the basics. If you want to build a strong house, you need strong foundations. If you want to become good at guitar – guess what – you also need strong foundations.

I will repeat this, because it’s really that important: don’t neglect the basics. Learn and master the fundamentals first and then move on. Doing it differently will later on result in many frustrations, I can guarantee you that. If you go slowly and don’t get ahead of yourself, you’ll soon be where you want to be.

I won’t lie to you, guitar is not an easy instrument, especially if you want to be really good at it. But it’s not that difficult either. Just get yourself some quality lessons (hint: DVDs) and be patient. It’s definitely worth it.

These Beginner Guitar Lessons Will Help You Become A Player Faster

If you’re just starting out on your guitar playing journey – these beginner guitar lessons will help you progress faster. In my 10 years of playing the guitar, I’ve learned quite a few things. It was not easy in the beginning, but it would have been easier if I had known the things that you’re about to learn.

Take Guitar Lessons from a Real Person First

Although you can learn a lot from online guitar lessons and books and dvds – they can’t take the place of a real, live person. This is especially true in the beginning. You really need an actual person to show you the correct way to hold your guitar; where to put your fingers; and how to strum different basic rhythms. When you make mistakes (you’ll make a ton in the beginning) your instructor can physically show you what you’re doing wrong. Only a real-live person can do this for you. And you really need this in the beginning. You don’t have to go to your instructor for a real long time if you don’t want to. You can get all the basics down after a month or two. Then you might choose to learn everything else from books, videos, or online lessons.

Regular Practice is Best

If at all possible, fit daily practice into your routine. It’s not a good idea to skip more than a couple of days between practice sessions. It doesn’t take an hour a day to get good. You can make real progress putting in a solid 10 or 15 minutes a day. If you only practice once or twice a week, you won’t progress nearly as fast. Even if those sessions are hour long sessions. Muscle memory and guitar reflexes need consistent, regular reinforcement.

It Will Be Tough in the Beginning

All new guitarists find it difficult in the beginning. You will have pain in all sorts of locations – especially your hands and fingers. And many people suffer with neck and back pain. But, don’t let it get you down. You will overcome this pain if you push through it. After a couple of weeks, your fingertips will develop calluses which will make it less painful to play. Your hands and wrist will become stronger and more flexible – and less painful too. Back and neck pain are the result of incorrect posture. This is why a live instructor is so important. They can help you to correct and work on any problems in your posture.

Buy a Quality Guitar

In an effort to save money, many beginning guitar students start out with a low-cost, poor quality guitar. This is never a wise decision. You might be saving money, but these cheap guitars are difficult to play – even for an experienced guitarist. The string action is usually way too high (strings sit high off the neck) – which makes it difficult to press them down and form notes and chords. These guitars have a hard time staying in tune. They often go out of tune after a couple minutes of playing. It’s no fun having to stop and retune your guitar every few minutes. And fret buzz is usually an issue. Fret buzz will make your playing really suffer. Good quality beginner guitars don’t cost a lot of money. You can get a nice, playable guitar in the $180 – $200 range. If you can’t afford a new one, get a used one. Go to your local guitar shop and try out as many guitars as you can to get a feel for them. If you don’t have much knowledge, take a knowledgeable friend with you or ask a sales clerk to demonstrate them for you. I would advise getting a name brand guitar – because they are known to put out quality instruments. What are some good name brand guitars for beginners? Fender, Yamaha, Ibanez, and Epiphone are companies that can be counted on to produce quality instruments.

Left Handed Electric Guitars And Their Features

It can be extremely difficult for left handed person to play a right-handed guitar, and in some cases it can even be impossible. For this reason, there are left handed electric guitars available at music instrument stores. These types of guitars are different in some very specific ways in the right handed counterparts, so it’s important for anyone new to playing guitar or has gotten used to right-handed guitar to know the differences. These not only more comfortable for left-handed people to play, but in some cases they can even be more comfortable for right-handed people to play.

As the name implies, left handed electric guitars are used differently than their right handed counterparts. With these guitars, the strings are attached in the opposite direction, with the thicker strings on the top and the thinner strings on the bottom of the guitar. The chords and picking styles of this guitar moves from lower notes to higher ones.

Further, it is important to ensure that the nut slots are properly fixed in such a way as to accommodate the reversed order of strings and reduce the possibility of wear and tear. Knobs on left handed electric guitars should be arranged so that they do not affect your drumming, so having them on the lower right hand side is preferable. The pick guard should be placed below the strings when held in the right direction, so as to protect the body of the guitar while picking the strings. Cutaways in such guitars should be placed on the lower side so as not to interfere with the musical experience. Also, if a particular model has two cutaways, then the larger one should be on the lower side of the guitar as opposed to the higher end.

Also, how you hold a left handed guitar is also different from holding a right handed one. Left handed electric guitars are held so that the body of the guitar is in the front and to the right of the musician while its neck reaches out to the left of the musician. The left hand is used to press the strings on the neck while the right hand is used to strum the strings so that a note is produced. This is convenient for anyone who is left handed because they do not have to strain to learn to hold the strings with their right hand.

Because left-handed electric guitars can be so different for right-handed variations, it will take even and experience guitar player some time to adjust. If you been playing with a right-handed guitar for some time and are left-handed, and you decide to pick up a left-handed model, that is going to take you a while to get used to. However, after you have practiced with it it will be more comfortable for you use.

Learning the guitar can be difficult enough as it is, and for those that are left handed it can be even worse. Luckily there are left-aligned electric guitars out there that make it much easier for those who predominantly use their left hand to pick up.

Amps come in all sizes and power ranges, from small practice amps to mega-sized arena amps. Typically the amps included in these packages tend to be small, good enough to learn how to play solo in your garage, but is powerful enough to perform with other instruments without getting overwhelmed. This isn’t bad news because as you progress in your ability, as you can invest in a larger, more powerful amp later on. Effects pedals and racks are next in line in importance and let you alter the sound coming from your guitar how you like, but you usually will not see these extras in packages.

High quality electric guitar packages should include everything you need to get started: a guitar strap, durable guitar picks, and an amp cable. Better packages include all of this as well as a soft guitar case, or an instructional book.

Learning to play the electric guitar can be a lot of fun. Starting with electric guitar packages is a great idea for the beginner. You may even find that some guitar shops will custom-build a package if you happen to be an intermediate or even advanced player. But this equipment can get expensive unless you save quite a bit. A lot have been inspirational to the new breed of guitar players while a whole lot imposed their influence in music and in other different fields. They have weathered the test of time, which makes it deserving to call them legends of the guitar.

A number of accomplished guitarists and starting guitar novices look up to these legends. There may be a new generation of guitar geniuses who will make it to fame or not, but they have a lot of things to do to measure up to the heroes in this list and become an all time great. Here are the heroes and why they are, truest sense of the word, legendary.

There is only one Jimi Hendrix. Rocketed to fame in the late’60s by performing at the Monterey Pop Festival and then later at Woodstock in’69, Hendrix broke a number of guitar conventions and set a trail where other guitarist would soon follow. Hendrix pioneered the guitar feedback using his famed Statocaster and was the first to integrate overdriven amplifiers in his music genius.

Jimmy Page is next on the list, but that does not mean he is the second best. Known primarily as the lead guitar for Led Zeppelin, Page was also a core member of the Yardbirds. His dedication to stage showmanship can be seen every time he plays his Gibson Les Paul Classic while making wild antics in the stage. He is ranked as the ninth greatest guitarist in the Rolling Stones top 100 list.

Carlos Santana fuses guitar playing with his Latino flavor. With his Gibson SG electric guitar, he creates music infused with something that can be described as mystical and magical, whether the genre is rock, blues, jazz fusion and salsa. Santana’s music is inspiring no doubt, which really incites other Latin guitarist to step up and make some music.

Also a former original Yardbirds member, Eric Clapton is perhaps the most accomplished guitarist of his generation. With his popular Eric Clapton Artist Signature Stratocaster, he strummed his guitar all the way and won a number of Grammy awards and received three Hall of Fame inductions. When Clapton plays, expect everybody to fall silent and get spellbound.

All About The Bass Guitar

Music today simply wouldn’t be what it is without the invention of the bass guitar. This musical instrument was developed because of issues that musicians were having at the time. It was difficult to hear people with low voices over the bass playing and many times, piano and brass sections also drowned the bass out.

The first electric bass guitar was purchased in 1935. It was created by Audiovox in Seattle, Washington and the designer was Paul H. Tutmarc. Paul was a musician and teacher, himself. The first bass guitar was made with piano strings. It was designed to be a simple to pick up instrument that was 42 inches long and was a bit cumbersome. This Electric Bass Fiddle, as it was called, was held in a horizontal manner and featured frets. This made it much easier to play than an acoustic bass.

There are some other important factors that play into the history and timeline of the evolution of the bass guitar between 1935 and today. In 1951, Leo Fender showed the world his precision bass guitar. In 1960, a second type of bass guitar was introduced. The jazz model was identified by two pickups, unlike the precision which has split pickup. The jazz model also had a sleeker finish and presentation.

There have been many breakthroughs in technology where music is concerned. You can find some great innovations in bass guitars that have blown away the old styles. In 1959, Danelectro produced the first six string bass. This was a huge leap in technology that now seems almost null and void.

Once Fender introduced these models, it seemed that things began to roll in the music world. There were new models being introduced and designed frequently and in 1959, the first six stringed bass was featured by Danelectro. Just after this, a similar model by Fender and Gibson were introduced. Fender had a fretless five string model that was released in 1964 and Bass Aubi had one in 1965, followed by the eight string model that Hagstroem introduced in 1968.

Once the instrument was released in these forms, its popularity spread quickly. Professional musicians began playing these works of art and they started showing up in every color and style of the spectrum. The two main styles of bass guitar, the jazz and precision, began fading into each other more and more and making it hard to discern.

Today’s popular music as well as most reggae music, uses the bass guitar as a rhythm instrument. However, different music genres use the bass in different ways, exploring its depth and rich sound. Many musicians appreciate the bass for its ability to produce many different sounds. There are many ways that you can learn how to play this incredible instrument. How To Choose The Perfect Guitar

So, you’ve made the decision to take up learning the guitar. Congratulations, you’re now at the beginning of a fun and rewarding journey.

Now, one of the most important things to decide before you begin is what kind of guitar should you get? This is dependent on what type of music you’re looking to play. Do you prefer rock, country, funk, metal, etc.? Whichever type of music you prefer, there’s pretty much a range of guitars to suit it.

So for example, if you enjoy listening to harder rock, like metal, then purchasing an Ibanez, Jackson or Washburn electric guitar would be best for you. However, if softer rock is more your thing, a guitar by Fender, Gibson or Yamaha would be the better choice.

The best thing to do after having done a little online research is to pay a visit to a guitar store and get a hands on feel of some. This is because your final decision should be based on the look and feel of a guitar, not just the company it’s made by.

The majority of guitar playing professionals opt to stick with one make or model of guitar. Players like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton primarily played Fender Stratocasters throughout their careers. I’d suggest looking up all your favourite guitar players online and finding out what type of guitar they typically use, then go and try those out in the store.

Basically, the higher the action, the harder you have to press down on the string, and the harder the guitar will be to play.

A fair percentage of guitars are made with an action that is too high for the those just learning to play the guitar to get to grips with. This can easily put beginners off learning the guitar after a few weeks of learning because it hurts too much to play. Don’t worry though, let the sales assistant know that you’re aware of this issue and they’ll show you guitars with actions that are well matched to your playing ability.

The Long Tradition Of Digital Synthesizers

The creation of the musical synthesizer transformed the sound enjoyment all around the world. An entertainer who wished to reproduce a certain type of sound before a live audience had to depend on conventional recordings. Nowadays, that can be done and produced live giving the performer a choice of thousands of sounds, notes and frequencies at his fingertips.

A synthesizer is a machine that gives a musician far more control over the sound of the music. A synthesizer will have frequency generators that can generate specific frequencies.

It has the capability to manipulate various parameters of the built-in sounds. It is not that these are used only for techno sounds, these instruments contain many melody and percussion sounds as well. Thus it can produce multiple sounds at a time.

Elisha Gray invented the first known synthesizer sometime in the latter part of the 1800s. He is mostly renowned for some of his other work: the telegraph and one of the first forms of the telephone. Gray led the way in electronics and was a future thinker in many ways. Although his premiere device was thought to be a little elementary by todays values, it cleared the path for models we have today.

Robert Moog, the father of the modern synthesizer, developed his ideas for an electronic instrument by starting out in 1961 and his synthesizer became publicized during 1990s. The Moog synthesizer is still widely perceived as a novel form of electronic keyboard.

Earlier versions of the synthesizers used buttons, dials, and levers, but Moog’s invention was the first to be controlled with a piano keyboard. This technology would be developed further to create not only the electric pianos and keyboards found in stores today, but also guitar synthesizers.

Some of the first synthesizers were big and bulky and not very easy to move around. The design Moog came up with, along with ever-changing technology, paved the course for tinier and easy to carry devices. These tinier products make more sense for entertaining, especially if they have to be moved around. The synthesizers made today are extremely complicated units. They are made using computer chips and mother boards and use computer technology. The units are small and mostly self-sufficient, somewhat like computers now mad, and are moved about with ease.

The keyboard synthesizer continues to be widely used by musicians, particularly ones who tour regularly. Both touring and studio musicians frequently use software synthesizers called softsynth to create digital sounds to enhance their music. A less common device that a musician might use is a saxophone-style synthesizer.

Let’s use the synthesizer as an example. Before buying a synthesizer or learning how to play it, you will want to know what brands are out there, how much a synthesizer costs, what are its features, and what parts go into making up the instrument.

A synthesizer is a very expensive instrument. Therefore, you should not rush into buying one. You carefully consider all that is involved in this decision.

Here are some decisions that you will need to make as you look at synthesizers: will you be using it to record in a studio or will you be playing it for your personal enjoyment; do you want an analog or digital synthesizer; do you want a classical synthesizer or a software synthesizer that you can program with high profile sounds; and, importantly, what is your budget.

When possible, go for moderation in price. You may not be able to go too high, but you don’t want to look for the lowest price either. What if it has a horrible keyboard or a sound that just isn’t right? What if it isn’t made well and won’t last a long time?
