A drum solo is an individual’s creative expression when playing the drum kit. It is the ability to create a percussive piece that adds depth to a song and to showcase one’s talent. Many famous drummers such as Billy Cobham, Neil Pert, Elvin Jones, and Jon Bonham have highlighted their expertise by performing incredible pieces. Great solos can be performed by anyone as long as there is room for imagination.

This is your spotlight where you can command everyone’s attention. Make sure there is a purpose for each stroke of the drum stick. Your drum set will not play by itself, you are the creator, make some noise. It is not necessary to create a masterpiece performing a solo. By keeping the solo precise and to the point, your creation can be of any length given the flow of the performance. Now is the time to take your listeners on a percussive journey that they will never forget.

It is important that a drummer or buyer of drum sets is aware of how to assemble them properly. Unless assembled in the right way, chances are that the drums will not sound correct, and the drums themselves could be damaged. Drum sets usually come with step-by-step instructions on how to assemble them.

Drum heads are also popularly known as the drum skins. The most important preservation of any drum kit is proper maintenance of this part. As a drummer, whether you are a professional or just a beginner, you should properly maintain the drum skins to extort a great sound out of the drum kit.

Some days use your entire practice time on developing your tuning skills. You want to know each of your drum’s best sound. You need to be able to hear it in you mind so when you tune a drum to that sound you will know it.

Before you get started, be sure to do warm-up exercises for drum set playing. Generally speaking, drum set exercises would refer to rudiments or chops but the information that is being presented to you has to do with warming up the body before any drumming.

I was informed that Mike Mangini (the world’s fastest drummer and record holder “gulp”) would be the judge. I was also told that the regional winner would be sent (for free) to winter NAMM for the chance to qualify (again) for the final 10 positions at “World’s Fastest Drummer Finals” to be held there. I must say, I liked the idea of a free trip for 2 to California and NAMM in the winter. But I really had no expectations – since I knew essentially nothing about how to improve my drumming technique, speed and endurance.

These exercises are great for relaxing the neck muscles. When doing head warm-ups be sure to maintain good posture and execute them slowly. This is to be emphasized for all of the other exercises as well to prevent injury.

BUT, I did win; with a score of 956 beats in 60 seconds! It wasn’t my best score up to that point, but at least I was now going to the International Fastest Drummer finals qualifications and NAMM. And I had about 2 months to practice! An important part of drum playing is relaxed breathing. A good warm-up, whether you are sitting or standing, is to take a slow, deep breath, filling the lungs with air.

After the seating of the heads, the brass drum lug screws should be fitted properly and subsequently the tom toms have to be mounted. While assembling the different toms, it is important to consider the lengths of the lug screws as larger toms require longer lug screws and smaller ones require smaller screws. The other pieces that have to be assembled include the bass pedal and stands such as high hat stand, cymbal stands and snare stands.

Some would say that it’s a secondary rhythm section (second line) that answers the calls of a “first-line” rhythm section in a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade. The first line would play a rhythm and the “second line” would respond to it, others will tell you that it’s just something that comes from New Orleans music and involves a marching snare rhythm: They’ll admit that they don’t know where it comes from but they’re quick to show you an example of how they think it’s played.

Play “heel up” on the bass drum for more power and speed. The heel down bass drum technique will work but requires a bit more effort. Also, it’s easier to play heel up technique with quick drum fills.

Cost: An important determining factor would be the amount you are willing to spend. Drum sets cost anywhere from $100 up to a custom built set of $6,000 or more. Most sets do not come equipped with hardware such as cymbal stands, cymbals, and kick pedals which can add to the cost, so it is best figure out your reason for the purchase and all that you need to complete the full drum kit.

Foot warm-ups, in a sitting position, raise your right foot off the floor about 10 inches. Point your toes away from you as far as you can, then point them towards you as much as you can. In a circular motion, rotate your foot to the right, then rotate to the left, repeat this exercise 4 times. After you have completed this for the right foot, do the same for the left foot.

Cheap Drum Kits are Smart to Start you Drum Experience

If you can afford to buy the best quality, do it. When purchasing a drum kit for the first time, you may want to consider looking at cheap drum kits. A beginning drummer has a long way to go before owning that dream kit. So exploring your passion for drumming makes sense by investing appropriately.

I can remember when I had an obsession for the first time to play the drums. Having been a rudiment drummer in my high school marching band, I knew a bit about the instruments. So, after years of taking a break from playing I was ready to get back to it. I was not mentally or financially prepared to ante up thousands of dollars or even several hundreds to satisfy my need to play.

Fortunately there were plenty of options to start out at a reasonable price range say, $250-$500. My original kit was used and fairly well worn in. I did not care since I was focused on learning to play and gauge my interest along the way before committing to big money on a really good sounding kit.

Your choice are brand and off brand. Try to stay clear of low end off brands unless your budget is tight. Buying a higher end off brand would be best if not a low end brand name. Brand name drum kits include Pearl, Ludwig, Gretch, and DW. Consider your investment in cymbals as these can vary greatly. You can always upgrade from your cheap drum kit.

Know your goal as someone who is going to play in a band, play for self enjoyment or even considering a professional career. Each has a different level of committment and discipline. Your resources must be prioritized and setting proper expectations is helpful. Playing the drums is the best part of the band in my opinion.

Buying an electronic drum kit can be a sensible option. Especially first starting out. The reason being you can control the volume if you live in an apartment or tight neighborhood. The other reason is variations of sounds. Each drum and cymbal can have a unique sound to further your experience and enjoyment. A separate amplifier needs to be purchased.

By starting at the low end you may have some extra money to invest in formal drum lessons or lessons online to further your drumming experience. Set proper expectations up front to commit to time and energy towards learning your instrument and developing your talent for drumming. It does take discipline like any musical instrument. The good news is it’s great exercise while you entertain the neighbors or perform in front of thousands.

Drum Rudiments are Important

Drum rudiments are the basics—the foundation of drumming. Learning drum rudiments is like learning how to play piano, or trumpet or do anything else for that matter. You need a good solid foundation of the basics of what you are doing so you can become the best at what you do. If you become really proficient at playing drum rudiments, you will have the tools necessary to be a good drummer. But be forewarned, it will take practice to become proficient.

There are 40 drum rudiments one should be proficient. These include single stroke, roll, flam, include the flam, paradiddle, and drag. These are the basics to being a complete and well-rounded drummer. If you have ever watched experienced drum and bugle corps, you will see the drum line knows their rudiments extremely well. Below is a listing of the basic rudiments.

Single Stroke Rudiments—Single Stroke Roll, Single Stroke Four, Single Stroke Seven

Roll Rudiments— Multiple Bounce Roll, Triple Stroke Roll, Double Stroke Roll, Five Stroke Roll, Six Stroke Roll, Seven Stroke Roll, Nine Stroke Roll, Thirteen Stroke Roll, Fifteen Stroke Roll and Seventeen Stroke Roll

Flam Rudiments— Flam Accent, Flam Tap, Flamacue, Flam Paradiddle, Single Flammed Mill, Flam Paradiddle-diddle, Pataflafla, Swiss Army Triplet, Inverted Flam Tap and Flam Drag

Paradiddle Rudiments— Single Paradiddle, Double Paradiddle, Triple Paradiddle and Paradiddle-diddle

Drag Rudiments— Ruff, Single Drag Tap, Double Drag Tap, Single Dragadiddle, Drag Paradiddle #1, Drag Paradiddle #2, Single Ratamacue, Double Ratamacue and Triple Ratamacue

When practicing the rudiments, make sure you can play them slowly at first before speeding up. Like anything, practicing mistakes will just reinforce playing the mistakes. So, make sure you start out slowly and work your way up. Some rudiments will be easier at first than others so all won’t be mastered at the same speed. Some will, no doubt, be frustrating so just slow down. Again, don’t practice mistakes.

Rudiments can be practiced anywhere as long as you have a surface which provides enough resistance to resemble a snare or practice pad. You can practice with no sticks but I have found this not to really help as much as one would think. Practice with sticks. Remember to start slow, increase speed a little at time, do not get frustrated and have fun. You will get better quickly.

The Ancient And Illustrious History Of Drums

The history of the drum goes a long distance back in our world’s history. People played them to generate sounds as far back as 6000 B.C. In these ancient societies, like the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas, the drum was a big part of society and was played during festivals and other events and gatherings. Drums were discovered in many caves and caverns in these ancient areas by researchers in later times.

Many people think that it is the barrel of the drum that makes the sound that is unique to the drum. But, in fact it is the tightly held fabric on the top, or the membrane, that is responsible for the beat. The sound is produced when the top of the drum is whacked with a stick of some sort. When the drum is hit, the membrane vibrates and sends the sound waves into the hollowed out stock of the drum. The Indians actually fashioned sticks to generate this sound during rituals and festivities.

In the 1900′s, drums began to be further built upon, and shortly thereafter, the drum set was born. A drum set has: a tom-tom, cymbals, snare drums, and bass drums (one of which has a foot pedal to smash it with. Other percussion instruments like bells, chimes, and wood blocks were used in conjunction to produce even more sounds to add to the overall melody of a song. These collections were introduced in the 1930′s and by the 1960,s, when rock took form, drum kits similar to the types described above were necessary for rock groups. You were not taken seriously if you and your band did not have drums as apart of your arsenal of instruments.

Like other instruments, drums became digitized for for production of created beats. Digital instruments, such as keyboards, synthesizers, and drum machines allow for the individual to fabricate their own beats. These sounds put together with synthesizers were unique and were not emulated from set of drums. For this reason, modern music employed these devices for such reasons.

Drums were not always used for music. In fact, people of other continents used to play them to send communications. A series of drum tones would signal a comment that others in the tribe can know the meaning of. Drums furthermore remained as a symbol of the spirits for American Indian folks and people around the world. Most referred to drums as a male and give them as a gift to teen boys becoming men.

The drum pumps out bass like nothing else. Drums have been played in different types of music, such as: rock and roll, funk, bluegrass, classical music, and other music groups. Next time you go to a concert of any kind, look around the stage and you will notice a drum or arrangement of drums of a number of different styles. These instruments are good for percussion and thick sounds; because of this, these instruments can be a perfect addition to a concert or band of any kind.

Drumming Lessons DVD: The Road To Your Success

But it was fun! A sales rep then told me I should enter their “fastest drummer” contest. When I asked him when it was, he said, “THE NEXT NIGHT”! After trying to bow out, I eventually said “okay”. Since I’ve always disliked “musical competitions” I don’t know why I agreed? So, I decided I wouldn’t tell anyone (including my wife) about it – talk about being insecure!

The most important thing to remember about home drum practice is to keep your family happy. They need to be for you and not against you. Once they have agreed to have drums in the home, you need to agree on the amount of practice time. As for me, one hour daily is the magic number.

It is important to distinguish between the front and back of the drums. There are two large drumheads that come with every drum set which need to be seated on each of the two brass drums. This seating should start with the back head followed by the front head.

The first step in developing a solo, an important ingredient that would need to be addressed, is the proper execution of rudiments. Are your single strokes, doubles, paradiddles, rolls, flams, and so on, played well? You will want to execute these smoothly and with precision. It will present the difference of being a beginner or professional drummer.

When it is uniformly tight, the tension on the skin is throughout even. As you strike on it, the tightness weakens and as this happens the tension changes. In certain cases the weakening of the heads will lead a form a dent.

Isolate your feet and practice nothing but them for extended periods of time. Play the samba bass drum rhythm “allot”. That’s always been a good one for getting your right foot in shape

This problem can be remedied if you will make the commitment to really focus on building your bass drum skills of the next several weeks. As you practice, try to incorporate some unique pedal work into everything you play. Also, spend time daily developing your bass drum technique. Continue to do this until you are comfortable playing in all settings. Once you have reached this point you have acquired an important ability that will serve you well throughout your musical career.

Practice single strokes for LONG periods of time. Get them EXTREMELY fast to where they become “very” comfortable. If the rest of your technique is relatively good, your arms will not tire after that

Dhama Suna

Typically, Tibetan ritual music proceeds in long sheens of deeply keening vocals and percussion. The world-renowned Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts seeks, on this CD, to partition their music into smaller units, allowing a vantage point on various musical styles and moods. The chants are present, with their low-end stretches taking shape, exploring tonalities, and disappearing in a matter of minutes. Also present are bellowing horns, digging into similar low-end sacred music that takes ample, seamless time to take shape. Expressivity rather than strict meditational focus seems to be the point for much of these 70 minutes. i–Andrew Bartlett/i
