When he moved the softbox back at the beginning, he said it was for a harder effect. I thought the light would be softer if you moved the light further back.

No, if the softbox (or any other light source) is moved further back it becomes smaller in relative terms, which means that the light becomes harder

yea some one else knows what they are talking about. the softness of a light is directly related to its distance to the subject. I mean the sun is pretty much the hardest light source available but would be a super soft diffused light if you were only a mile a way but then you would be on fire and it wouldnt matter

Good information, pretty subject, but, she should not “slouch” sit up straight, it would be much more flattering.

The softbox acts as a huge light though, so you get light coming from many different directions (hence surrounding) hitting the model from all directions. Think of the direction from the outer edges of the softbox in relation to the model, and then how that direction is affected when you move the softbox away from the model. Harder is not the same as brighter…

I’m going to sound naive, but is there a recommended shutter-speed/aperture setting to make normal household shots look bright and glamourous (like brochures)? without using lights(within dark walls or white walls….)
I have tungsten spotlights, but not enough, nor reflectors…..so they just make the shots even more shadowy. Please, any tips. Thanks.

If you’re just using ordinary household lights you’ll need a very wide aperture, high ISO and a slow shutter speed – it’s doable but the reason we use flash in the studio is to CONTROL the light, it’s about quality of light as well as quantity. It’s very difficult to control ordinary household lights

Informative video. It’s also a plus that the guy sounds like Michael Caine.
